We’ve a change of AAC in the area with
Tanya Howard replacing Janet Wischhusen
after many years of sterling service to our
members. Janet will be remembered for her
Shetland tandem, all her hard work with
Young Drivers, her fantastic sense of humour
and her thoughtfulness. Luckily for us, and
if we ask her nicely, Janet will be helping out
as and when she can, with show stewarding
her undoubted forte. Remember that until 1
November you can still qualify for our special
area award by attending or helping at 10 BBH
events throughout the summer. Green cards
that record your attendances are available from
Linda or just download one from our website.
2 Aug – BDS Trec event with optional fun cone
driving at Ley Farm, Colesden, Beds. Ring
Linda for entry form or see one on our area
website. The Crowland Challenge trophy will
be presented to the winning turnout - Entry
fee £10.
5 Aug – Pay a mid week visit to the revamped
Mossman Collection at Stockwood Park in
Luton. Plenty for holidaying Young Drivers
to see and do too, all free! Excellent restaurant
for lunch or tea. Contact Linda for any other
details.
11 Aug – Don’t forget this is the Young Drivers
Scholarship day in Norfolk if you’ve already
entered! If not – why not try for it next year?

15 Aug – BBQ at Gamlingay, near Sandy, Beds
by kind invitation on Cyndy & Martin. Just £5
each please towards the food, but bring a bottle
and a seat! All welcome, but please advise
numbers to Linda by 10 August latest.
23 Aug – BDS Regional show at Equifest, East of
England showground near Peterborough. Classes
for exercise vehicles, native ponies, specials for
Young Drivers and local BDS members. Details
from their website or from Linda.
23 Aug – Pix Farm funday organised by
CHDC, Bourne End, nr Hemel Hempstead.

29 Aug – Drivers Dream show near
Biggleswade, Beds., including the 2009 Style &

30 Aug – Regional BDS Trec at Forest Edge

5 Sept – Another of our popular ‘Try-it’ days
this time at Shuttleworth Equine College,
Old Warden nr Biggleswade, Beds SG18 9EA
from 11am until 1pm at a cost of just £5 per
person. Booking in advance recommended by
ringing 07850 706978. Capable members and
suitable turnouts welcome to give a little help to
newcomers. Contact Linda to offer help and for
any more details.
12 Sept – Very much ‘weather permitting’
there will be an informal garden party for area
members from 2pm by kind invitation of Ray
Howitt at 28 Hitchin Road, Upper Caldecote
nr Biggleswade, Beds SG18 9BT. Cake
donations very welcome on the day! Please ring

and to check if weather doubtful.
13 Sept – CHDC dressage competition – Test
no. 7, but in a fun way! Various other activities
& a chance for a road drive. Ring Kath – 01442

19 Sept – ‘Try Trec’ afternoon near Ampthill,
Beds. A chance to just have a go, test your
horse or pony even your groom at the Skills
and maybe get new ideas for the Safety phase.
Competitive Skills test if required. Bring a
picnic tea to enjoy. No turnout? No problem!

20 Sept – National Donkey Driving Day
is being celebrated at Wimpole Hall, near
Royston, Herts. Go along & see our long eared
friends in action!
27 Sept – CHDC treasure hunt from Long

3 & 4 Oct – Our Championship show at
Towerlands, Braintree, Essex. Why not sponsor

11 Oct – By kind permission of Lord Salisbury,
there will be a sponsored drive through the
estate of Hatfield House in aid of Driving for
the Disabled and the Willow Foundation.

4 Nov – Heavy Horse Talk at Wimpole Hall,
Royston, Herts – 11am -an introduction
into the daily lives of Wimpole’s Shire horses,
including an opportunity to meet these gentle
giants. £8 includes coffee on arrival. Booking

8 Nov – A new venue for our annual area
meeting. This year it’s at Sarratt Village Hall,
The Green, Sarratt near Rickmansworth, Herts
WD3 6AS from 7.30pm prompt so if you’ve
never been before, this could be your chance
to attend! We’ll discuss what has happened in
2009 and what we want to happen in 2010.
All members welcome, refreshments available.
14 Nov – Our annual end of season dinner and
a little light music at The Novotel, Stevenage,
Herts. Tables of ten available with tickets just
£25 each. Please send your cheque made out to

Spot prizes on the night and presentation of our
end of year awards too.
Something to consider over the winter months
might be training sessions for the Preliminary
Competence Certificate (Level 1) which
involves being capable of harnessing up and
driving a single turnout safely to a basic simple
standard and to include an understanding of
safety on the roads and basic human first aid.
Consists of 3 units which may be taken on the
same day, or at a different time. Don’t forget the
Road Driving Assessment too – not mandatory,
but a very good idea if only to brush up on
your methods! Those who would like to ‘give it
a go’, please contact Linda in the first instance
so we can gather a group of members together
for the training and decide on a venue. Syllabus

Remember that your BDS membership card
should be with you at all driving events as proof
of insurance and may be checked before each
event. Those aged 14 years and under must
wear hard hats at all times whilst in a carriage
