British Driving Society
A charge of £25 pp children under 10yrs free. Arrive Friday evening or Saturday morning. Bring your own stabling
facilities free of charge or rent a stable for £10 per night (The camp site is on the banks of the river Wye)
Accommodation can be arranged locally.
Itinerary
Saturday a.m – Box up and drive 8 miles to Bwlch Nant-yr-Arian forestry centre. (café and toilet facilities) The drive
starts at 11am and is approximately 16 miles. The first stage is to the Nant-y-Moch reservoir for a picnic. After lunch
tracks and a river crossing go through some of the best and wildest scenery in mid Wales. Return to the visitor centre
in time to see the Red Kites being fed.
Saturday evening – Back at the campsite there will be a barbeque, free of charge, and a bar serving beer and wine.
Sunday 11 a.m. – An 11 mile drive starting and finishing with a crossing through the river Wye with more splendid
views of the upper reaches of the Wye valley and Plynlymon (the third highest mountain in Wales). There will be a
short rest for a picnic at the Bothy which is the halfway point.
Monday – A shorter 6 mile drive can be arranged if you still have the energy.
BDS Trec continues to be a popular
part of many areas’ activities and ever
more ingenious skills are being created
to test the ability of the whip and the
agility of the groom!
For those few who are still in the
dark about Trec, it’s a low key three
phase event comprising of a safety
presentation, a short drive out and six
or eight untimed skills.
All these are completed individually
making it an ideal starting point for
novice animals and perhaps also less
seasoned drivers.
However it is very much a fun
event for everyone and has become
somewhat addictive to quite a few now
known as ‘Treccies’!

about each phase. It is clearly a good
idea that all these competitions follow
the same rough agenda, so these
guidelines must be considered and
adhered to wherever possible.
Main BDS funds offer a grant
to many areas who apply early and
we are delighted that following her
involvement in this year’s AGM at
Hinckley, Blanche Surman, Affinity
Marketing Executive from NFU Mutual,
Stratford-upon-Avon, kindly agreed to
provide a further £800 which enables
a further right events to benefit and
perhaps buy extra equipment or hire a
better venue. This was a very generous
offer and greatly appreciated.
In addition to funding, on
application, Tess Styles at Head Office
will also send two sets of rosettes to
every Trec organiser, one for the whip
as well as one for the groom who is
a vital part of the turnout on these
occasions.
For 2009, as in previous years,
V-Bandz, makers of high quality
reflective gear for all, have supplied
vouchers to the value of £10 each
for the winning turnouts and these

Transport Law Update
With the new transport laws on
lorries, the Society in the person
of Chairman, John Parker, are still
working trying to get changes made
to drivers’ hours over 7.5 tonnes.
Approaches have been made to MPs
and the Welsh Assembly. Seventeen
MP’s and Welsh Assembly members
have taken up the matter for us. We
do require more MPs’ support and
a letter can be found on the BDS
website which members can print
off, sign and sent to their own MP.
It must be remembered that VOSA,
who interpreted the law, do control all
vehicles and drivers’ hours of vehicles
down to under 3.5 tonnes under what
is known as ‘GB Law’. There is, at the
moment, an exemption for 7.5 tonnes
and under but we all know that this
can change. Help us to help you by
writing to your MP.
Congratulations
Two Gloucestershire BDS members,
Barry McCooey and Rachael Edwards
got married on the 4th July. Glyn Williams’
wedding vehicle was put to a team of
4 horses, one of which was Barry and
Rachael’s horse Victor. The carriage was
driven by Tony Seller with the North
Cotswold Hunt supplying the grooms. Best
wishes to the happy couple.

The Drive left Annahunshigo
Orange Hall on the Lackin Rd,
Ballyward with Uel Orr leading the
way with a team of welsh cobs to a
four wheel sporting dog cart. On the
box seat with Uel was Eugene Larkin
Chairman of the Northern Ireland
Branch British Driving Society. Next
on the road was Mr Robert Smyth
and groom Emma Morgan driving
a beautiful pair of George Fawcett’s
Friesians to a landau and on board
were special guests Hon. Sec. Mrs
Margret Carlisle with Mr David
Erereton and Mr John Powel.
24th April was a lovely sunny
day to take in the scenery on the five
mile route with four of the turn outs
driven by junior members.
Norman Brown judged the best
turnout on the day sponsored by F.S.
Herron feeds.
A huge thanks has to go to
all the drivers, friends and family
who supported with a BBQ to
follow, also thanks to Joe Gibson
(Ballyward) Euro Spar butchery &
deli department (Castlewellan) and
the Office Bearers and members of
Annahunshigo Orange hall.
