The Regional Training Clinic at Merrist Wood in late April went really well with participants not only learning a lot from the instructors Gary Docking and Minta Winn, but by the end of the day turnouts were improving and everyone was asking for a further Training Clinic on this basis. A very positive and enjoyable day enjoyed by everyone instructors and participants alike. May was a busy month with our Mayday Meet, BDS TREC and Whiteley Village Drive. All these events were well supported and greatly enjoyed by members. Many thanks to our organisers Gail Brownrigg and Dave and Helen Pritchard plus all the wonderful helpers who make these days run so smoothly. I have to report that Mr Chris Jacob has decided that he and his wife Margo would like to spend more time enjoying the grandchildren, so he has decided to retire from his position which he has held for many years. I know that you would like me to thank him for all of you, but he will be returning to offer his assistance at any time in the future. I would like to announce that Mr Peter Munt has agreed to become Assistant Commissioner for my very well with nine turnouts having a lovely drive followed by a cones competition in the afternoon. Please remember that an able groom is a compulsory feature with each turnout and that those aged 14 or under must be accompanied by a competent adult at all times and must also wear a hard hat in the interests of safety. Please ensure that turnouts are harnessed correctly. Drivers are asked to drive safely and sensibly giving consideration to other carriage drivers, spectators and members of the public. All turnouts must have a competent groom/ passenger on the vehicle (no sulkies or one seater vehicles). The only show anywhere in Wiltshire that has affiliated Hackney Driving Classes. We have 10 sessions of 3 hours each on summer evenings about every fortnight, beginning at the end of April. We shall carry this through until September so please contact Paddy if you wish to join in. We will hold our Young Drivers Camp this summer from 10th to the 13th August with the help of the Wolverley Club, Sarah Wildy and Judith Broom, this will be open to adults as well if we have space. Area News The first of the Area’s Shows has taken place, although the weather forecast was not great we had a fine day until we were packing up and then it just poured! It’s always worth just checking the local forecast before finally abandoning the day. There have been several drives including a most enjoyable evening drive with a mid way stop at a local pub, a great way to meet the public and tell them all about Carriage Driving. Drives will continue throughout the year, new venues for drive are always being sought please contact Hazel or Joyce if you are able to host a new venue. The Three counties show will be held while I am away, Belinda James and Lester Dagge are again organising the program together with the Wolverley club and it promises to be very exciting again this year, lots of classes for all and with a new event to demonstrate to the general public the indoor driving trials. Our newsletters are published in the BDS news and also on our website. Please remember that if you are a beginner or no longer driving you are always more than welcome to attend on foot either as a spectator or as a steward or helper at BDS events and club events at local or national level, we are a very friendly group of people!
