The vehicle maintenance day was well attended and great fun. Maurice and Mike talked, adjusted and greased their way around a variety of vehicles. Many thanks to them and to their hosts, the Rees’, a successful idea. The diary had Our Hog Roast social evening went really well, with everyone enjoying the Karaoke well into the early hours. We are hoping to organise an area show in 2010. Anyone interested in being involved in the show committee please contact me as soon as possible. to be adjusted to fit in with the National Parks and the Beach Drive and Anne Windsor having to cancel her date. So, on April 26th there was a starter day at Furzehill Farm. A select group who wanted to talk, watch and drive for a day. Tina, Maggie, Gilly, Tonto and Dennis went through harness, vehicles, pony, general safe procedure and at last, some driving. The result, we have two new drivers coming along happily with confidence growing all the way. Plus helpers for events. New friends - that’s what it is all about. The pending beach drive could only be held on May 10th. The weather was glorious, Dates for diary August 8th – Vintage Transport Day. The Stevens family provided an all day picnic on the front, chairs, tea, food and then two and a half hours up and down this huge beach. Hard sand and lovely views and full sun. What an experience. The few members who took up this chance had a day to remember. We will do it again on 20th September. Book now. Thank you all! On 17th May we were grateful to Lester Dagge for taking on the drive at short notice. The weather let us down, but the tractor and our host did not. Lovely drive with refreshments and a pull out of the sodden field after, thanks Lester. Great countryside and company. Special congrats to Veronica Chesnott and Priscilla Bubb. Long journey for Ronnie and debut drive. Priscilla with her new pony. Big smiles all round. Next came the first of our camp weekends, hosted so well again by Val and Paul Higginson at Furzehill Farm. Numbers were down, no Cimla Club sadly. The seven who made it had a good drive on Saturday through the lanes,
WEST WALES Cont. mapped and signed all the way. Wonderful weather so the BBQ was outdoors as was Sunday breakfast. For the Trek on the Sunday, former member, Molly Watts had laid out a master plan. She is now a pro ridden Trek practitioner. Many thanks for really well organised paperwork, easy to follow, mark on all tasks. Our helpers had their instructions and sheets to follow-thanks to them all, it was a hot afternoon. I shall just mention one of new active members again, Ronnie and groom, Ashley, who came fourth in the Trek. Great result, the modern phrase is ‘respect’. Many of our judges on the field were new to us too. They made the effort to come and help without their ponies-thank you all. 1st Lester Dagge, 2nd Tina Ree, 3rd Eleanor Stevens Well done Eli, driving a pony she had only met that day and very well too. These three will go forward to the finals in September. The weather continued to smile on Area 36 for June 12-14 up into the mountains of Pembrokeshire. Out thanks to Carolyn Morgan of Crosswell Trekking Centre. Fields were provided and all camping facilities. The Cimla Club arrived on Friday night and we all joined them on Saturday morning. Carolyn had phoned her friends so we had access to wonderful lunch spots and cross country tracks on both days, Northern Ireland NORTHERN IRELAND AC Liz Kelly Tel: 02840 671318 Mobile 07771 798281 4th May – Irish Hackney Society show Ballymena has changed venue causing a few problems for some to find but all enjoyed the day. Mr Jonathan Carnduff, Millisle Ulisha. 2nd G Fawcett, Saintfield Pair of Friesians, 3rd Mr Norman Brown, Lisburn Rosehall Tara Maiden with Jonathan Carnduff Ulisha Champion and Reserve Champion Private Driving going to Mr William McAnally, Fronarth Shaun 25 miles of heavenly country and hellish hills on Saturday. The Gwaun Valley and Newport Seaviews totalling 15 miles on the Sunday- very fit ponies. If you haven’t been, you haven’t seen! God’s country. Thank you Carolyn for a wonderful weekend. Two items for you: Mark is collecting names for the Road Driving Tests. Do come forward and take these. Mark needs to put groups together and has dates in view for test days. Please phone him and book in, he is ready to advise and give encouragement to you all. Lester and his team had a most successful first appearance at St Clears show early in the season. Much enjoyed by the show team Jonathan Carnduff David Boyd’s hackney pony Heartland Mighty Fine was Champion Royal Ulster - second time out. 16th May – BDS Shane’s Castle Drive. Shane’s Castle is the family seat of the O’Neill’s of Clandeboy. Although the castle has been in ruins since the fire of 1816, the remaining structure, including a unique Camellia House is Area News | British Driving Society and crowd.
