With the driving season now in full swing I am<br />
pleased to report that all our Surrey Area events<br />
have been well supported and enjoyed.<br />
The Regional Training Clinic at Merrist Wood<br />
in late April went really well with participants<br />
not only learning a lot from the instructors<br />
Gary Docking and Minta Winn, but by the<br />
end of the day turnouts were improving and<br />
everyone was asking for a further Training<br />
Clinic on this basis. A very positive and<br />
enjoyable day enjoyed by everyone instructors<br />
and participants alike.<br />
May was a busy month with our Mayday Meet,<br />
BDS TREC and Whiteley Village Drive. All<br />
these events were well supported and greatly<br />
enjoyed by members. Many thanks to our<br />
organisers Gail Brownrigg and Dave and Helen<br />
Pritchard plus all the wonderful helpers who<br />
make these days run so smoothly.<br />

I do hope that you are all enjoying your driving<br />
whether it be shows, rallies or trials. The idea<br />
is to enjoy yourself and your horses and drive<br />
safely. I have to report that Mr Chris Jacob has<br />
decided that he and his wife Margo would like<br />
to spend more time enjoying the grandchildren,<br />
so he has decided to retire from his position<br />
which he has held for many years. I know<br />
that you would like me to thank him for all<br />
of you, but he will be returning to offer his<br />
assistance at any time in the future. I would like<br />
to announce that Mr Peter Munt has agreed<br />
to become Assistant Commissioner for my<br />
very well with nine turnouts having a lovely<br />
drive followed by a cones competition in the<br />
afternoon. <strong>Special</strong> thanks to Mary and John<br />
Crittall for organising the day and Colin Noon<br />
for setting up the cones.<br />

areas, as he lives on the Northants and Rugby<br />
borders and he is keen to assist the members<br />
of Northhants as well as the other areas so<br />
that Olive and myself can all enjoy working<br />
together. I asked Peter if he would be willing to<br />
use his yard for our area to train and test our<br />
members on the unit of competence for carriage<br />
driving and road assessment and he stated that<br />
he would be pleased to do so. That is the end<br />
of my news.<br />

Please Note: We will be asking for BDS<br />
Membership Cards at all Area Events this<br />
year – so don’t forget to bring it along. Please<br />
remember that an able groom is a compulsory<br />
feature with each turnout and that those<br />
aged 14 or under must be accompanied by<br />
a competent adult at all times and must also<br />
wear a hard hat in the interests of safety. Please<br />
ensure that turnouts are harnessed correctly.<br />
Drivers are asked to drive safely and sensibly<br />
giving consideration to other carriage drivers,<br />
spectators and members of the public. All<br />
turnouts must have a competent groom/<br />
passenger on the vehicle (no sulkies or one<br />
seater vehicles).<br />
