It’s been a slow start to the season, with one
drive cancelled and one change of venue. Frank
and Margaret Edwards stepped in and saved the
day when we lost our Dalby venue at the last
minute and allowed us to have it at Scackleton.
Ten turnouts enjoyed a very sociable weekend
and had some wonderful drives, thanks to
Frank negotiating with several landowners for
permission to cross their property. Many thanks
Frank. May I remind everyone to please let
hosts know at least one week in advance if they
are going to attend a rally so that they can be
catered for.
May I also take this opportunity to wish Joyce
Sugden a speedy recovery after a dreadful
accident when her pair bolted, resulting in the
deaths of both horses and broken legs amongst
other injuries for Joyce.
Thirteen area members embarked the coach
bound for John Parker’s Swingletree Stables
on April 25th, as we set off it seemed a long
way to go for a visit and one or two felt guilty
for leaving jobs undone at home on such a
beautiful spring day. None of us had visited the
BDS chairman at home before and we were not
sure what to expect. On arrival we were treated
to tea and biscuits and then we were privileged
to spend a day in the company of the driving
world’s most interesting character and his team
of helpers. Most of our merry day trippers
drove either a single or a pair of Connemaras or
a pair of John’s coach horses and all were treated
to a very informative guided tour of the coach
house, tack room and the stables. Our chairman
works so hard for the society fighting for the
rights of the horse world, that we don’t get to
You will notice that the proposed visit to the
Royal Mews has been cancelled due to lack
of interest, instead I am organising a trip to
Caroline Dale Leech’s Carriage Boot Sale,
bookings ASAP to me. It’s looking as though
we’re in for some pretty hot weather this year,
for a change, so we look forward to seeing lots
more of you at rallies and shows around the
area, so best wishes to you all and good luck in
those shows.
August
Aug 1-2 – Driving and training weekend at
and behaviour. Barbecue Sat eve. Ring Mark
see John Parker the horseman very often these
days, but those who visited that day saw the real
John talking passionately about his horses and
his life with partner Sue. Many thanks to John,
Susan and all on the yard for making our day
so enjoyable.
Our Area show (see show report in this issue)
on the 30th may have bucked the national
trend and enjoyed even bigger entries than last
year. A big thank you must go to all our very
generous sponsors without whom the show
could not run, and to all the competitors and
stewards, also to our judges Claudia Bunn,
Martin Atlkinson and John Baggaley for
coming and making it another perfect day.
Also, thanks to show secretary Beth Foster who
puts so much into the running of the show
and who arrived on the show ground with her
