Christian economics 101:
the art of Stewardship
Christian economics is the art of good
stewardship in obedience to the simple
biblical procedures which the Lord has laid
out for us. Stewardship is the emphasis of a
substantial portion of the Bible, and it must
become a major emphasis for our time.
As the Lord made clear in the Parable of
the Talents (see Matthew 25:14-30), we must
seek to use everything the Lord has entrusted
to us in the most profitable way. It is right that
we give more emphasis to our spiritual gifts
than our natural resources. However, what
is often overlooked in this parable is that the
kind of talents the Lord was talking about was
money. In Bible times, talents were a form of
currency. Certainly we must not exclude the
literal interpretation of this parable as well.
Recorded in Luke 16:9-13, we have another
related exhortation from the Lord:
“And I say to you, make friends
for yourselves by means of the
mammon of unrighteousness; that
when it fails, they may receive you
into the eternal dwellings.
