II Samuel 24:1-17). We may say that this is
not fair, but there could be no true authority
if there were not also true responsibility.
The more authority we have been given,
the more those we have authority over will
be hurt by our mistakes. These are God’s
children who are getting hurt.
The Scriptures exhort us, “If we judged
ourselves rightly, we should not be judged”
(I Corinthians 11:31). If we will examine
ourselves, praying for the Lord to send His
Holy Spirit to convict us of any evil way and
embracing correction as a sign of God’s
favor, we will not have to endure the worse
judgment when it comes. To serve the
Lord’s own household and to be stewards
of His resources is a most serious matter.
If we are called to do this, we must live by
the very highest standards of integrity. We
must understand the great responsibility
we have been given and treat it with the
seriousness that it deserves. It is not just
the money that makes it serious, it is the
integrity of His household.
Before the end, when nothing else on this
earth is stable or trustworthy, the world will
look at the church and see a people who can
be utterly trusted, whose word is their bond,
because the God they serve is trustworthy. The
strength of our witness will be determined
