Health, safety and<br />
environmental performance<br />
<strong>GKN</strong> is committed to cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement <strong>in</strong><br />
health, safety and environmental performance.<br />
With regard to health and safety our goal is zero<br />
preventable accidents. Our commitment to protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the environment is focused on both m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
impact of our operations and on mak<strong>in</strong>g a contribution<br />
towards a susta<strong>in</strong>able future through the design of our<br />
products. Compliance with applicable health, safety and<br />
environmental laws and regulations is a fundamental<br />
obligation for all our bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />
There are two <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognised standards<br />
by which management systems for safety and<br />
environmental performance are assessed: OHSAS<br />
18001 for safety and ISO 14001 for environmental<br />
performance. Central to these is a requirement<br />
for cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement driven by regular<br />
measurement and evaluation of performance,<br />
identification and implementation of action plans, and<br />
measurement of results.<br />
In June <strong>2008</strong>, the Executive Committee mandated<br />
that all <strong>GKN</strong> locations achieve compliance with<br />
OHSAS 18001 and our bus<strong>in</strong>esses are work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
toward that goal. At the end of <strong>2008</strong>, 35 locations had<br />
achieved certification to this standard. 115 locations,<br />
represent<strong>in</strong>g 90% of the workforce, have achieved<br />
certification to the ISO 14001 standard.<br />
Involvement of our workforce is essential to achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />
our health, safety and environmental goals. In pursuit<br />
of our goal of zero preventable accidents we focus on<br />
strong, visible and supportive leadership accompanied<br />
by a commitment from employees to take ownership of<br />
their own health and safety and that of their immediate<br />
colleagues. The RADAR programme (Risk Awareness,<br />
Detection, Action and Review) launched Group-wide <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>2008</strong> represents one of a number of behavioural safety<br />
tools deployed with<strong>in</strong> the Group and allows our workers<br />
to improve safety conditions <strong>in</strong> their work area.<br />

The specialists forum of safety and environmental<br />
professionals has developed action plans for<br />
implement<strong>in</strong>g OHSAS-compliant safety management<br />
systems and a policy for purchas<strong>in</strong>g only energy<br />
efficient mach<strong>in</strong>ery. In addition, a dedicated <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
website has been established to facilitate knowledge<br />
shar<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>Report</strong><strong>in</strong>g on performance<br />
Our performance aga<strong>in</strong>st the key health and safety<br />
and environmental <strong>in</strong>dicators is measured on a<br />
regular basis and reports are made quarterly to the<br />
Sub-Committee on Governance and Risk and to the<br />
Executive Committee. A half yearly report is also<br />
made to the Board. Significant health and safety and<br />
environmental <strong>in</strong>cidents are reported to Executive<br />
Committee members with<strong>in</strong> 24 hours and reviewed<br />
at the Committee’s next meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
In early <strong>2008</strong> a new web based report<strong>in</strong>g tool was<br />
launched Group-wide to facilitate both the collection<br />
of data and, more importantly, its analysis and use<br />
by management at all levels to help drive improved<br />
performance. Group bus<strong>in</strong>esses are required to<br />
confirm and certify the accuracy of the data that they<br />
report.<br />
A specialists forum, compris<strong>in</strong>g divisional and<br />
corporate centre representatives, meets as required<br />
to discuss best practice as well as specific issues<br />
<strong>in</strong> relation to the management of accidental risk<br />
that either its members or the Sub-Committee on<br />
Governance and Risk believe require attention.<br />
Us<strong>in</strong>g Lean Enterprise techniques, employees at <strong>GKN</strong> S<strong>in</strong>ter Metals — Dubois, US,<br />
created a safety system which builds on the RADAR programme and enhances employee<br />
<strong>in</strong>volvement and safety awareness through the audit of other departments’ work space<br />
and practices. At the end of <strong>2008</strong>, Dubois had achieved three years without a lost time<br />
accident.<br />
