succeeded in bringing booty safely back to Susa. Brought<br />

face to face with Assyria, when the intervening buffer<br />

states had been absorbed, Elam fought heroically against<br />

superior organization, forces, and equipment. Even so,<br />

thanks to her inaccessibility and valour, she might well<br />

have survived Assyria but for civil dissensions, which again<br />

and again paralysed her arms at the most critical<br />

juncture.<br />

In the end she fell, and so entirely was her greatness<br />

forgotten that in the pages <strong>of</strong> Strabo we read that<br />

at Susa because <strong>of</strong> its situation<br />

Cyrus placed the capital<br />

and the importance <strong>of</strong> the city, and also because " it had<br />

never <strong>of</strong> itself undertaken any great enterprise and had<br />

always been in subjection to other people." ^<br />
