France, the stills camera does what
the moving image cannot do: it
gives us time to refl ect on who or
what we are really looking at.
In an aerial shot of women’s
eyes painted on to the roofs of the
trains that pass through Nairobi’s
Kibera slum, or in a close-up of
cyclist Lance Armstrong’s legs on
which the veins protrude like a
three-dimensional road map, we
are invited to see the world
differently, to focus on the
remarkable in the mundane. Living
as we do in the age of YouTube,
when so much of the imagery that
bombards us masquerades as
having resonance, we can look at
David Chancellor’s series depicting
starving Zimbabwean villagers in
the act of reducing a fallen
elephant to bones and be reminded
of how simple stories reveal the
bigger picture and the more
complex issues. This is what lies at
the heart of all great journalism.

Lorsque l’on découvre le
portrait de Barack Obama, pris
quelques instants avant qu’il
ne prête serment, on pressent
immédiatement que cette image
va entrer dans l’histoire. Qu’il
s’agisse de lutteurs sénégalais ou
d’immigrés algériens en France,
l’objectif de l’appareil photo fi ge
l’instant : on peut enfi n réfl échir
dans le calme à l’image qui nous
est présentée.
Dans une prise-de-vue aérienne
d’un train au toit orné d’un œil de
femme qui traverse le bidonville de
Kibera, à Nairobi, ou un gros plan
des mollets de Lance Armstrong,
dont les veines saillent au point
de ressembler à une carte routière,
toutes ces images invitent à
considérer le monde sous un autre
angle. À l’ère de YouTube, nous
sommes bombardés d’images
superfi cielles. Par contre, la série de
photos prise par David Chancellor,
