frédéric mahoux A matter of justice The people of brussels are divided. After 130 years of faithful service, Brussels’ Palais de Justice is nearing the end of its working life. It unites every superlative: biggest law courts in the world, biggest stone structure built in the 19th century, most perfect execution of the golden mean – divine architectural proportions – of its era, and the best place for a prisoner to escape from during his or her trial. Following sensational break-outs via the maze of corridors last year, the Belgian government has decided that the capital’s fl agship building will no longer be used to deliver justice. But what will become of this symbolic Brussels building when the barristers and judges no longer sweep along its corridors in their robes? Since the beginning of April, the city’s residents have been split: those who back costly endeavours to secure and extend its role as a courthouse and those who believe this historical giant deserves a new lease of life away from lawyers and criminals. It’s a task of some magnitude – re-imagining a building bigger than St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is no mean feat. Some of the more hare-brained suggestions so far include Belgian theatre director Franco Dragone’s desire to create a souk refl ecting Brussels’s multiculturalism, while the city’s younger residents are hoping for a giant club with strobe lighting illuminating the 110m-high dome. In July, as it takes over the presidency of the European Union, the federal government will launch an appeal for projects to renovate the Palais de Justice. So as leading business fi gure Eric Domb puts it, why not turn it into an amalgamation of all Belgian museums, bringing all of Belgium’s artistic work under one roof? At 52,500 square metres, the project’s ambition would equal that of the British Museum and the Louvre. Le débat fait rage. // Il cumule tous les superlatifs : plus grand palais de justice du monde, plus grande construction en pierre du XIX e siècle, parfaite mise en application du nombre d’or à l’époque de sa construction et... le plus sur moyen de s’évader pour un détenu au moment de son procès ! Le palais de justice de Bruxelles, vit ses derniers mois d’activité, près de 130 ans après sa mise en service. En effet, après deux évasions retentissantes via son dédale de couloirs l’an dernier, le gouvernement belge a décidé que ce bâtiment phare de la capitale n’abriterait bientôt plus la Justice. Mais que pourrait-on bien faire de ce lieu emblématique de Bruxelles si les hommes et femmes de loi n’y déambulent plus en robe ? Depuis le début du mois d’avril, les Bruxellois s’opposent entre partisans de coûteux travaux pour le sécuriser et prolonger son rôle de demeure de la Justice et ceux pour qui le géant d’un autre temps a bien mérité une seconde vie sans juges ni brigands. Le défi est de taille car on ne réaménage pas facilement un bâtiment plus grand que la Basilique Saint-Pierre à Rome ! Alors, les projets les extravagants se bousculent. Le scénographe Franco Dragone y verrait bien un souk représentatif de la multiculturalité bruxelloise, les plus jeunes imaginent une discothèque géante et son phare stroboscopique au sommet de la coupole qui culmine à 110 mètres... En juillet prochain, le Gouvernement fédéral organisera un grand appel à projets pour son réaménagement à l’occasion de sa présidence européenne. Alors, comme l’évoquait Eric Domb, ex-patron des patrons wallons, pourquoi pas un musée de tous les musées belges qui regrouperait l’ensemble de la production artistique nationale ? Avec une superfi cie de 52 500 m 2 , ce projet ambitieux créerait un rival pour le British Museum ou Le Louvre… L’occasion de rendre enfi n justice au palais !
