undoubtedly have negative impacts on taxa that have a limited distribution or highly specific habitat
● Determine what existing vascular plant taxa within the parkway are considered invasive. The
NPS has gone to great efforts to control the invasion of many plant taxa such as; tree of heaven
[Ailanthus altissima (P. Mill.) Swingle] and kudzu [Pueraria montana (Lour.) Merr. var. lobata (Willd.)
Maesen & S. Almeida] (personal communication Whitworth 2004).
This inventory encompassed a parkwide inventory of all vascular plant taxa, with an additional
emphasis on plant taxa listed as threatened or endangered on either federal or individual state lists, and
identification of taxa considered invasive. The inventory consisted of three primary methods of
investigation: 1) a literature review, 2) a herbaria search, and 3) an intensive field inventory.
2.1 Literature Review
A review of available literature was conducted to determine any vascular plant taxa that have been
previously documented on the NATR. Searches of scientific journals, relevant national, regional, and local
floras, and several un-published NPS reports provided by the NATR staff were reviewed for verifiable
records of collections within NATR boundaries.
2.2 Herbaria Search
A written request for existing records of plant specimens was sent to 4 national, and 38 regional,
herbaria. Specimen records were requested from regional herbaria in Alabama (8), Arkansas (6), Louisiana
(7), Mississippi (7), Tennessee (9), and Texas (1). The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) was
included because the collection formerly housed at Vanderbilt University (VDB), Nashville, TN is currently
being curated at BRIT. The same request was made to four national herbaria; the New York Botanical
Garden (NY), the Smithsonian Institution (US), Harvard University Herbaria (HUH), and the Missouri
Botanical Garden (MO) since these larger collections typically house a much wider geographic and
taxonomic representation than many smaller herbaria. The request specifically targeted records of any
vascular plants and endangered taxa in the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The search
criteria were; 1) any records of specimens collected in the counties through which the NATR traversed, and
2) a listing of any threatened or endangered taxa accounts for those states. The list of herbaria searched
and the appropriate herbarium acronyms were taken from Index Herbariorum (IH 2004).
