The taxa included on the checklist in section 4.0 below were compared with the Interactive Encyclopedia of North American Weeds (SWSS 2005) for “weedy” taxa and the national invasive taxa list at www.invasive.org (Invasive Species 2006), for invasive taxa. The checklist was also compared to the Federal Noxious Weed List (June 30, 2006), in addition to a search of the USDA PLANTS Database for noxious weeds in each of the states along the NATR route. Of the identified taxa on the NATR checklist, 12.75% of the taxa present are considered weedy, while 8% of the identified taxa are considered invasive. None of the taxa on the list were found on the federal noxious weed list, or any of the state lists, as per the USDA database. 3.3.9 Verification of Vouchers at NATR Headquarters The identification of vascular plants represented by vouchers at the NATR headquarters were not independently verified by the research team and are therefore assumed to be accurate. As such, all inferences based on these specimens are contingent upon the identifications provided. However, based on the identifications provided by the NATR staff, and in consultation with current distributional data, ten (10) of the taxa listed would not be expected to occur in the area of the NATR or the states where the specimens were collected. Therefore, a loan of the specimens representing these 10 taxa was requested of NATR staff. A total of 11 specimens were borrowed, and examined, to determine if the vouchers were in fact correctly identified. The list in Table 12 provides the results of these verifications and the status of the vouchers. Identifications of the questioned NATR vouchers in Table 12 were completed by TAES staff. Of the ten taxa examined, seven were determined to be correct. However, although correctly identified, the voucher for Aesculus hippocastanum L. was not collected within current NATR boundaries. Based on label data the specimen was collected on the grounds of the Lee County Courthouse in Tupelo Mississippi and does not represent a voucher for the NATR flora. The remaining six taxa may represent new additions to the flora of their respective states. The final status as new records is currently being investigated by TAES staff. The two specimens of Cystopteris fragilis (L.) Bernh., were very immature and a correct identification of these specimens could not be verified. The specimens of Polystichum lonchitis (L.) Roth and Oenothera oakesiana (Gray) J.W. Robbins ex S. Wats. & Coult., were determined to be incorrect. The specimen of P. lonchitis was corrected as Polystichum acrostichoides (Michx.) Schott., and the O. oakesiana was determined to be Oenothera laciniata Hill. 30
