Appendix C – Locations of Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Plant Taxa on the Natchez Trace Parkway This detailed results and discussion section concerning rare, threatened, and endangered plant taxa, is placed in this appendix to provide a “stand alone” document which is not intended to be publically accessible. A general discussion of these taxa is provided in section 3.3.7 in the main body of the report and does not reveal any identifiable locations where historical or extant plants or populations may exist. The results provided in this appendix are a compilation of two previously stated reports; Rosso and Reed 1996 and TNC 1995. In addition, a report of two potentialy new populations of A. priceana B. L. Robbins, are discussed. New Taxon Locations and Populations: Apios priceana B. L. Robbins, Price’s potato-bean - In August 2004, populations of plants were encountered at two separate sites in Tennessee which appeared similar to a photo of A. priceana. Without having any available characters to determine if this plant was indeed A. priceana, the endangered taxon, or A. americana, it was decided to document the occurence and location with digital photo voucher and recheck measurements on the July 2005 collection trip. However, on two subsequent trips in July and October 2005, each of the two locations was rechecked for the presence of the plants. On both occasions, no plants were observed at either location. Therefore measurements could not be taken to determine which Apios sp. was actually present. As discussed in Section 3.3.1, the regular mowing of the roadsides and adjacent prairies undoubtedly had an impact of the development of the NATR flora from season to season. The failure to relocate A. priceana at these sites is believed to be the result of this maintenance. As stated previously, the original observations were made on 20 August 2004, when most of the roadsides and prairies were in an unmown condition. At that time two locations were found, each consisting of what would appear to be multiple individuals of A. priceana. The first site was on the northeast corner of the intersection of the NATR and Tennessee Highway 64 between mile markers 370 and 371 (TAES Site #18 - N 35.3219167, W 87.5799444). At this site, plants were observed growing on the east side of a small isolated grove of trees near the roadway. Individual plants were observed growing on the shaded edge of the trees and a few individuals had extended into the adjacent prairie supported by the dense grass cover and other herbaceous vegetation. All plants appeared to be healthy and many were flowering at that time. On the same day a second site was located on the west side of the NATR in a wet meadow just before the Alabama state line between mile markers 342 and 343 (TAES Site # 21 - N 35.0180556, W 87.8231944). At this site individuals were again found growing along the shaded edge of the tree line at the north end of the meadow. Although fewer in number all plants again appeared to be healthy and flowering. Additional observations at this site revealed multiple individuals which exhibited - 190 -
some degree of color variation in the flowers. This color difference could indicate multiple taxa or just a natural range of variation within a single taxon. On subsequent trips, both sites had been mowed up to, and in some cases beyond, the tree line and there was no evidence of the previously documented populations. Previously Documented Taxa and Populations In the table that follows, known locations of extant plants or populations are listed alphabeticaly by taxon, and include the latest documented observation date and the source of such data.
