3 Driving a VEMA Vehicle 28 INSPECTIONS Commercial Inspections Certain vehicles require MPI’s Commercial Vehicle Inspection either every six months or once a year. If applicable, commercial inspections form part of your vehicle’s Preventive Maintenance (PM) Program. If your vehicle is subject to a commercial inspection, we’ll let you know when an inspection is overdue through our monthly PM Notices. Commercial inspections will appear as an S service on your PM Notices. Trucks Vehicles of 4,500 kg GVW and over, require an annual inspection. A truck generally requires a commercial inspection if it has at least a 1 ton chassis and has dual rear wheels. This includes ambulances. Buses A bus is any passenger vehicle that is capable of carrying over 11 people (including the driver); as such, a 12 or 15 passenger van is classifi ed as a bus. Buses require an inspection every 6 months. Buses must pass a commercial inspection to be legal on the road. You can be assessed heavy fi nes and your vehicle may be confi scated if your bus doesn’t have an up-to-date inspection certifi cate. Similar to the PM notices, VEMA will send reminders to your organization’s Vehicle Coordinator when your vehicles are overdue for commercial inspections. The driver of the vehicle is ultimately responsible for ensuring the vehicle is legal for operation on the road. Trip Inspections In 1996, a regulation was passed requiring drivers of commercial vehicles and any attached trailers to complete Trip Inspections. In general, the regulation states that the driver is responsible for performing the inspection, recording any defects, notifying their organization and VEMA of the defect, taking the vehicle to be repaired, and submitting an inspection report. It is your organization’s responsibility to ensure these rules are followed. For more information on Trip Inspections, please call our Light Duty Operations Manager at 204-945-8897. Note Remember to ask the service station to call VEMA for authorization before performing any work on your vehicle.
Driver Inspections Driving a VEMA Vehicle We recommend that drivers check the status of their vehicle on a weekly basis, or every time they fuel up, to ensure the vehicle is safe and to prevent expensive repairs. It is your responsibility as the driver to ensure your vehicle is safe to operate. Regularly observe the condition of the following: • Tire pressure • Radiator (for debris) • Tire condition • Windows (wipers, chips or cracks) • Exterior lights • Seat belts • Interior lights • Pedal operation • Dashboard indicator lights • Brakes • Fluid levels • Unusual noises • Fluid seepage Take your vehicle in for servicing when you notice problems. Do not hesitate to call VEMA if you have a concern about the safety of your vehicle. 29 3
