ran we prove the existence of color and light to a man who<br />

was born blind ; they are facts which he cannot appreciate,<br />

because lacking in the requisite faculty. But if he acquires<br />

the faculty of sight by an operation, it will be unneces-<br />

sary to prove these facts to him, he will then see their<br />

verity. For similar reasons no one can appreciate proofs<br />

of the immortality of the spirit until he has fitted himself<br />

to see the spirit; then it will be easy for him to obtain<br />

positive proof of the immortality of spirit, its existence<br />

prior to birth and persistence after death. Until he has<br />

thus qualified himself, he must be satisfied with reasonable<br />

inferences such as may be obtained in many ways.<br />
