1R 2R 3R 4r 4R 5R 6R Science at Museo delle Scienze: Research Report 2010-2011 research in udzungwa contributes to a global camera trapping study on rainforest mammals Section of Tropical Biodiversity since 2009, the field station in the udzungwa Mountains managed by Trento Museum is part of a pan-tropical network of sites conducting standardized biodiversity monitoring. The network is called TeAM (Tropical ecology, Assessment and Monitoring, http://www.teamnetwork. org) and is an initiative of conservation international in partnership with leading institutions including the Wildlife conservation society, the smithsonian institution and the Missouri Botanical Garden. With 17 sites currently active, and a planned increase to 25 sites by 2015, TeAM’s mission is to generate real time data to monitoring long-term trends in tropical biodiversity, providing an early warning system on the status of tropical forests to effectively guide conservation action. Adhering to standardized protocols, each site of the network monitors trends in (1) the community of terrestrial vertebrates (mainly mammals) through camera-trapping, (2) carbon stock and vegetation diversity through tree plots, and (3) several meteorological parameters through automatic weather stations. here we report on one of the first studies that presented a comparison of results from a suite of sites on rainforest mammals. The study compared results from camera-trapping sampling conducted in the 7 sites across the three continents on earth holding rainforest (Africa, southeast Asia and south America) for which at least one year of data collection was conducted. data collection entails the 42 deployment of 60 camera trap stations within an area of 120 km 2 for 30 days at each site. sampling yielded an unparalleled data-set, made of 51.000 camera trap images that represented 105 species of terrestrial mammals, spanning the size from a mouse to an elephant. sites were categorized according to the habitat fragmentation of the landscape where they are inscribed, from continuous forests to highly fragmented forests. The analysis examined the variation with the degree of forest fragmentation of several aspects of species and community diversity (species richness, species diversity, evenness, dominance, functional diversity and community structure). Results showed that mammal communities from highly fragmented sites have lower species richness, species diversity, functional diversity and higher dominance when compared with sites in partially fragmented and continuous forest. The study emphasizes the importance of standardized camera trapping approaches for obtaining baselines for monitoring forest mammal communities so as to adequately understand the effect of global, regional and local threats and appropriately inform conservation actions.
