the epigravettian site of Palù echen (folgaria Plateau)
Section of Prehistory
The palaeoethnological and palaeoenvironmental
researches affected
the north-east edge of the Palù echen
peat-bog on the Folgaria Plateau (municipality
of Folgaria, province of Trento),
and led to recognize an epigravettian site
partially preserved. The preliminary study
of Pech 1 has allowed the identification,
on a total excavated area of 30 square
meters, of two distinct and marked concentrations
in flint artifacts that probably
correspond to two different working areas
within the same episode of human
occupation. The particular configuration
and preservation of the settlement will
enable a cross-disciplinary work through
geoarchaeological investigations, techno-typological
analysis of lithic artifacts,
spatial distribution of the remains and
studies on the modality of procurement
and exploitation of the lithic raw material.
The chronology of echen 1 is based on a
radiocarbon date of 10.320 ± 60 14 c Age
(BP), 12.209 ± 197 (cal BP), and on the
cultural comparison of the lithic artifacts’
features, related to the terminal phase of
the Recent epigravettian; this chrono-cultural
stage is documented in the eastern
italian Alps in open air sites such Piancavallo,
Andalo, Pian dei laghetti, laghetto
delle Regole, Bus de la lum, and in two
rockshelters, the nearest one Riparo la
cogola at carbonare di Folgaria, and
Riparo soman in Adige valley. An impor-

tant finding in terms of anthropic structures
is the evidence of two concentrations
of remains, named A and B. singular
is the accumulation in B, located
around a porphyry rock sub-rounded,
which suggests an overriding transformation
of raw materials. Previously interpreted
as a store of stone materials, the
B area contains flints of various nature
and consistency, from poor to high quality
in terms of aptitude to flaking, some
of which destined to future exploitation.
This structure is compared with other
dated to the late upper Paleolithic and
Mesolithic in various sites of europe, including
Val lastari and Palughetto. other
correlations that mainly concern the
organization and spatial arrangement
of living space can be made with sauveterrian
Mesolithic sites in the Alpine
area, open air stations located at high
altitude, characterized by evidence of a
simple spatial organization. Palù echen
testifies to the Paleolithic-Mesolithic
transition.
