the epigravettian site of Palù echen (folgaria Pl<strong>at</strong>eau)<br />

The palaeoethnological and palaeoenvironmental<br />

researches affected<br />

the north-east edge of the Palù echen<br />

pe<strong>at</strong>-bog on the Folgaria Pl<strong>at</strong>eau (municipality<br />

of Folgaria, province of Trento),<br />

and led to recognize an epigravettian site<br />

partially preserved. The preliminary study<br />

of Pech 1 has allowed the identific<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

on a total excav<strong>at</strong>ed area of 30 square<br />

meters, of two <strong>di</strong>stinct and marked concentr<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

in flint artifacts th<strong>at</strong> probably<br />

correspond to two <strong>di</strong>fferent working areas<br />

within the same episode of human<br />

occup<strong>at</strong>ion. The particular configur<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and preserv<strong>at</strong>ion of the settlement will<br />

enable a cross-<strong>di</strong>sciplinary work through<br />

geoarchaeological investig<strong>at</strong>ions, techno-typological<br />

analysis of lithic artifacts,<br />

sp<strong>at</strong>ial <strong>di</strong>stribution of the remains and<br />

stu<strong>di</strong>es on the modality of procurement<br />

and exploit<strong>at</strong>ion of the lithic raw m<strong>at</strong>erial.<br />

The chronology of echen 1 is based on a<br />

ra<strong>di</strong>ocarbon d<strong>at</strong>e of 10.320 ± 60 14 c Age<br />

(BP), 12.209 ± 197 (cal BP), and on the<br />

cultural comparison of the lithic artifacts’<br />

fe<strong>at</strong>ures, rel<strong>at</strong>ed to the terminal phase of<br />

the Recent epigravettian; this chrono-cultural<br />

stage is documented in the eastern<br />

italian Alps in open air sites such Piancavallo,<br />

Andalo, Pian dei laghetti, laghetto<br />

<strong>delle</strong> Regole, Bus de la lum, and in two<br />

rockshelters, the nearest one Riparo la<br />

cogola <strong>at</strong> carbonare <strong>di</strong> Folgaria, and<br />

Riparo soman in A<strong>di</strong>ge valley. An impor-<br />

tant fin<strong>di</strong>ng in terms of anthropic structures<br />

is the evidence of two concentr<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

of remains, named A and B. singular<br />

is the accumul<strong>at</strong>ion in B, loc<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

around a porphyry rock sub-rounded,<br />

which suggests an overri<strong>di</strong>ng transform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of raw m<strong>at</strong>erials. Previously interpreted<br />

as a store of stone m<strong>at</strong>erials, the<br />

B area contains flints of various n<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

and consistency, from poor to high quality<br />

in terms of aptitude to flaking, some<br />

of which destined to future exploit<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

This structure is compared with other<br />

d<strong>at</strong>ed to the l<strong>at</strong>e upper Paleolithic and<br />

Mesolithic in various sites of europe, inclu<strong>di</strong>ng<br />

Val lastari and Palughetto. other<br />

correl<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> mainly concern the<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion and sp<strong>at</strong>ial arrangement<br />

of living space can be made with sauveterrian<br />

Mesolithic sites in the Alpine<br />

area, open air st<strong>at</strong>ions loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> high<br />

altitude, characterized by evidence of a<br />

simple sp<strong>at</strong>ial organiz<strong>at</strong>ion. Palù echen<br />

testifies to the Paleolithic-Mesolithic<br />

transition.<br />
