Born in Firenze in 1970, he is a zoologist<br />
and conserv<strong>at</strong>ion biologist. he obtained a<br />
degree in n<strong>at</strong>ural sciences in 1995 <strong>at</strong> the<br />
university of Florence with eco-ethological<br />
research thesis, and a Ph.d. in Animal<br />
ecology in 2000 <strong>at</strong> the university of Wales<br />
(Bangor), uK. since 1999 is conducting<br />
research and environmental cooper<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
activities in eastern Africa. since 2003 he<br />
is affili<strong>at</strong>ed to Mds, and conducted during<br />
2004-2007 a post-doctoral research<br />
project funded by the Provincia Autonoma<br />
<strong>di</strong> Trento on ecology and conserv<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />
prim<strong>at</strong>es and forest ungul<strong>at</strong>es in the udzungwa<br />
Mountains, Tanzania, where he has<br />
been working since 2002. in 2008 he became the cur<strong>at</strong>or of the newlyestablished<br />
Tropical Bio<strong>di</strong>versity section within Mds. his main research<br />
interests are on thre<strong>at</strong>ened popul<strong>at</strong>ions of forest mammals in Tanzania;<br />
research aims include abundance estim<strong>at</strong>ion, habit<strong>at</strong> use and modeling,<br />
and conserv<strong>at</strong>ion st<strong>at</strong>us assessment. Besides pure and applied research,<br />
he developed a keen interest in ecological monitoring, technical support<br />
to protected areas, habit<strong>at</strong> connectivity analysis, development of community<br />
conserv<strong>at</strong>ion plans. This led to the establishment of the udzungwa<br />
ecological Monitoring centre (www.udzungwacentre.org) th<strong>at</strong> he <strong>di</strong>rects<br />
since 2006. it is a field st<strong>at</strong>ion annexed to the udzungwa Mountains n<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Park th<strong>at</strong> facilit<strong>at</strong>es researchers and provides technical support to<br />
the park, also serving as a bridge between park management and community’s<br />
environmental <strong>at</strong>titudes. The st<strong>at</strong>ion became the first site in Africa<br />
of the Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring (TeAM) network, managed<br />
by conserv<strong>at</strong>ion intern<strong>at</strong>ional. he wrote over 50 scientific and public<br />
science papers, and book chapters.<br />
FABio PuPin<br />
Research fellow<br />
Born in Asiago (Vi) in 1978, since 2009 he<br />
collabor<strong>at</strong>es with Mds where he contributes<br />
to the various projects on east Africa herpetofauna.<br />
in particular, he has been involved<br />
in a research program on the herpetofauna<br />
of the Albertine Rift and he is implementing<br />
the contents of the website Tanzaniaherps.<br />
org. Before joining the Tropical Bio<strong>di</strong>versity<br />
section he collabor<strong>at</strong>ed with the Animal Biology<br />
section of the university of Pavia (italy)<br />
on various researches on ecology, behaviour<br />
and morphology of amphibians and reptiles.<br />
in the same university he achieved his bachelor and Ph.d. degrees.<br />
