as the fore-finger. Leaves four to ten inches long by three-<br />

quarters to one and a quarter inch broad, linear-lanceolate<br />

or almost strap-shaped, gradually narrowed to the acumi-<br />

nate point, nearly flat, with five, rarely seven, strong<br />

nerves, dark green, sheaths spotted with red purple; upper<br />

leaves much abbreviated, spathaceous, with acute points<br />

appressed to the stem. Spike three inches to a foot long,<br />

cylindric, obtuse, very many flowered ; bracts oblong-<br />

lanceolate, acuminate, longer or shorter than the orange-<br />

yellow or light red or scarlet flowers. Perianth three-<br />

quarters of an inch long from the tip of the dorsal sepal to<br />

that of the lip, densely crowded, suberect. Dorsal sepal<br />

erect, oblong, subacute, very concave, cymbiform, spurred at<br />

the base behind ; the spur shorter than the sepal, cylindric<br />

or slightly inflated, obtuse, pointing downwards in a line<br />

with the axis of the sepal ; lateral very broadly ovate,<br />

rounded at the tips. Petals much smaller than the sepals,<br />

erect and partially concealed by the upper sepal, linear-<br />

oblong, tip obtuse and incurved. Lip strap-shaped, smooth,<br />

flat or convex, obtuse or subacute, slightly constricted<br />

above the base. Anthers suberect, cells narrow, parallel.<br />

Stigma suborbicular, sessile, depressed in the middle, notched<br />

in front. Ovary about one-third of an inch long, much<br />
