TILLANDSIA (Conostachys) Malzinei; acaulis, foliis basalibus 15-20 dense roralatia<br />

loratis falcatis chartaceis subpedalibus nullo modo lepidotis apice deltoideo-<br />

cuspidatis facie viridibus dorso rubro-brunneis verticaliter lineatis, pedúnculo<br />

stricto erecto foliis breviori foliis reductis pluribus lanceolatis falcatis prredito,<br />

floribus 12-20 in spicam strictam subdensam multifariam disposito, bracteis<br />

magnis glabris ovatis navicularibus luteis vel rubris, pedicellis brevibus crawis,<br />

calyce protruso glabro sepalis oblongis obtusis, petalis lingulatis obtusis albidis<br />

calyce duplo longioribus basi squamatis, genitalibus petalis paulo brevioribus,<br />

antheris parvis luteis versatilibus.<br />

The present species represents the section Conostachys<br />

of the large genus Tillandsia, which is characterized by its<br />

scaled petals and multifarious spikes, and is the first species<br />

of that section which has been figured in the BOTANICAL<br />

MAGAZINE. It was discovered about the year 1870 in the<br />

neighbourhood of Cordova, in Mexico, by the Belgian<br />

gentleman after whom it is named, M. Orner de Malzinc,<br />

and was first flowered in cultivation by M. Jacob Makoy,<br />

of Liege, in 1872. The excellent figure in the Belgique<br />

Horticole above cited represents a variety with red bracts.<br />

In our plant, which flowered at Kew in April, 1879, the<br />

bracts are yellow.<br />

DESCE. Acaulescent. Leaves fifteen or twenty in a dense<br />

rosette, lorate, about a foot long, three inches broad at the<br />

dilated base, an inch and a half or two inches at the middle,<br />

falcate, chartaceous in texture, not at all lepidote, the apex<br />

deltoid cuspidate, the face bright green, the back red-<br />

brown with fine vertical lines. Peduncle simple, rather<br />

shorter than the leaves, stiffly erect, with several falcate<br />
