Hawkins' Hospital was by no means unique as a charity for seamen or shipwrights and beside the<br />

Chatham Chest were the undermentioned. <strong>The</strong> following <strong>list</strong> is not exhaustive:­<br />

1. Royal Greenwich Hospital<br />

This organisation was founded in 1694 as a home for infirm seamen and marines taking<br />

such as in-pensioners until 1869. <strong>The</strong> hospital also supported out-pensioners<br />

(Bevan/Duncan).<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> Charity for the Relief of Officers' Widows<br />

This organisation was active for at least the period 1734-1929 (Bevan/Duncan).<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> Compassionate Fund<br />

This was voted by Parliament from 1809 and was available <strong>to</strong> orphans and dependents of<br />

Officers killed in action and not otherwise eligible for assitance. <strong>The</strong> records date down <strong>to</strong><br />

at least 1921 (Bevan/Duncan).<br />

4. Admiralty: Official pensions <strong>to</strong> the widows and orphans of commissioned officers, masters<br />

and warrant officers, records of which commence in 1673 (Bevan/Duncan).<br />

5. Royal Bounty<br />

This fund made payments <strong>to</strong> the widows, dependent children or indigent mothers aged over<br />

50, of officers and ratings killed in action, whose records run from 1672-1822.<br />

6. <strong>The</strong> Trinity House of Deptford<br />

Although navigational skills became the main concern of this foundation dating from 1514,<br />

its charter nevertheless mentions an almshouse. Trinity House Deptford, if taken in<br />

conjunction with Hawkins' Hospital and the Chatham Chest, completes a <strong>to</strong>tal of three<br />

charities founded along the same lines and all located in Kent (Black).<br />

7. Lord Kitchener Memorial Homes. Chatham<br />

Founded in 1917 by Chatham Borough Council, this home is open <strong>to</strong> ex-servicemen. It is<br />

still active and is now administered by Rochester Upon Medway City Council.<br />

8. Roval Naval Benevolent Trust<br />

This national charity administers Pembroke House, Oxford Road, Gillingham.<br />

9. Ann Phillips' Charity. Chatham 1799-1992<br />

This charity has been incorporated in<strong>to</strong> Hawkins' Hospital by the Charity Commissioners.<br />

It relieved widows and orphan children of deceased shipwrights, divided two thirds <strong>to</strong> those<br />

of Shipwrights dying in Chatham and one third <strong>to</strong> those dying in Gillingham. (Deposit of<br />

records pending as at July 1995)<br />

10. Royal Sailors' Rest, Portsmouth (Current)<br />
