Box with hinged lid and fastening tape originally containing<br />

deeds /280-290, 293.<br />

Bears two paper labels on lid <strong>to</strong>p, both nearly contemporary with<br />

box inscribed (a) "old deeds and conveyances of the Estate in<br />

Chatham" and (b) more descriptively of contents, this latter with<br />

a notation by A.A . Arnold, Dep. Governor, 14 July 1914, that<br />

several items were passed <strong>to</strong> "Rochester [Eastgate] Museum"<br />

[now Guildhall Museum]. <strong>The</strong>se items have been res<strong>to</strong>red <strong>to</strong> the<br />

collection, viz. /280, 293. At least one other item bearing<br />

Hawkins' own signature was misappropriated earlier in the 20th<br />

Century (probably the counter<strong>part</strong> conveyance mentioned by<br />

Arnold, p.5).<br />
