Background:<br />

Folktales are beloved and familiar stories told and retold to teach cultural values or to provide<br />

entertainment. “Baby Cat Meets the Family” is a folktale about a family celebration, which has<br />

been passed down through generations in Haiti’s oral tradition. The importance of family is<br />

central to <strong>Haitian</strong> culture. In Haiti, the meaning of family extends beyond the immediate family to<br />

include relatives, friends, and neighbors. In short, “family” embraces everyone you hold dear.<br />

Procedures/Activities:<br />

1. Discuss the meaning and importance of family with the class. Explain the meaning of extended<br />

family and its importance in various cultures.
