CREATE A HAITIAN LEARNING CENTER<br />

Create a learning center in which your students can explore Haiti, visit its past, and learn about the<br />
people and culture. This learning center integrates a wide variety of skills.<br />

• Maps (World, Haiti)<br />
• Books about Haiti<br />
• Encyclopedia<br />
• Newspapers<br />
• Paper<br />
• Index cards<br />
• Pencils, color pencils<br />
• Crayons, color markers<br />
• Color construction paper<br />
• Travel brochures of Haiti<br />
• Tag board<br />
• Scissors, glue, stapler<br />
• Aluminum foil<br />
• Pieces of cardboard<br />
• The Word by Word - <strong>Haitian</strong> Creole Dictionary (Prentice Hall Regents)<br />
Set-Up Ideas:<br />
• Use a small bulletin board with a table in front to set up materials.<br />
• Use a display board on a table. Create folder pockets and attach to board to hold instructions<br />
and materials.<br />
• Share space with a Social Studies or Language Arts display.<br />
• Use a refrigerator box covered with color paper and use each side to display work and maps.<br />
Attach folder pockets with activities, etc.<br />
• Use a variety of containers to hold materials on tabletops or counters (for example: storage<br />
tubs, boxes, gift bags, resealable plastic bags).<br />
• Create a class mural of Haiti as a background for the center.<br />
• Use green and brown bulletin board paper to make palm trees.<br />
