1881 1st interferometer measurement by Albert A. MICHELSON (1852-1931) in the vault under the eastern cupola of the AOP → • The experiment aimed at proving the relative motion of the Earth against the hypothetical „light ether“. • The negative outcome of this experiment suggested that the velocity of light is independent of the velocity of the light source. • This discovery encouraged Albert EINSTEIN (1879-1955) in his strong rejection of the „Ether Theory“ of light propagation and lead in its consequence to the development of the „Theory of Relativity“.
