1831-36 Friedrich Wilhelm BESSEL (<strong>17</strong>84-1846) →<br />

carries out the East Prussia arc measurement,<br />

assisted by Colonell J. J. Bayer.<br />

1861 Johann Jacob BAEYER (<strong>17</strong>94-1885), meanwhile<br />

<strong>General</strong>-lieutenant in the Prussian <strong>General</strong> Staff →<br />

submits to the Royal Prussian War Ministry the<br />

memorandum: „Draft for a Central European Arc<br />

Measurement“. Its main goals were:<br />

• To homogenize and connect the triangulations<br />

of all participating countries;<br />

• Narrow-mesh determination of deflections of<br />

the vertical for studying the shape of the geoid,<br />

including geodetic-astronomical measurements<br />

at 30 astronomical observatories in the area.<br />
