Energy tapped from sun and wind can be used to split hydrogen and oxygen from water (another inexhaustible source) so that automobiles could use them instead of carbon fuels. Contrary to popular disinformation, petroleum is also inexhaustible. They are not made from biotic material compressed between layers of the earth crust over millennia. No, petroleum did not come compressed dinosaur and plant material. Petroleum is just another mineral like iron ore or limestone. It is the polluting characteristics of petro-products that makes them an undesirable option. However, carbon fuels have high energy density, which is in their favour. Alternative energy technologies, say hydrogen fuel cells, are extremely heavy, making them unsuitable for use in automobiles. Electric vehicles pose serious waste disposal problems. Hydrogen-oxygen combustion holds a lot of promise. As water is an extremely inert molecule, a lot of energy is required to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water.
