Make your RAW shots really roar!
The summer months are a petrolhead’s
dream, whether you’re an F1 or MotoGP
nut, or more into classic motors. Head
to glorious Goodwood for this year’s Festival
of Speed (2-4 July) and you can rub shoulders
with motorsports legends and other celebrities
while bagging great shots of everything from
muscle cars to bubble cars. Meanwhile, the F1
British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone
on 9-11 July. Or, check out your local paper for
details of classic car and bike rallies – colour,
chrome and characters guaranteed!
Our interview
with an F1 pro
shooter
on p100
Get started today…
* Use a diffuser (or white card) and polarising
lens filter for killer car close-ups on sunny days.
* Don’t forget the details can look great too,
so include decals, interiors and shiny chrome.
* Try graduated filters (whether physical
or in Photoshop later) to give your skies that
dramatic Top Gear look.
* Try panning when shooting car races – set a
1/50 sec shutter speed and swivel your hips to
create wonderful motion blur. Merely freezing a
racing vehicle in a shot gives no sense of speed.
Warm it up
1Use Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) in
Photoshop CS to liven up your flat
sunset. First move the Temperature slider
to a hot 12250. It’s a very similar process in
Photoshop Elements.
Back to black…
2For deep tones and rich blacks in the
foreground take the Blacks slider to
around 15, the Exposure slider to -0.40 and
Contrast to about 40. Use the Fill Light slider
to recover foreground detail, if necessary.
Thefinal polish
3Move the Clarity slider to around 25
to refine the midtone contrast and
perceived sharpness. Set the Vibrance
slider to a similar level to boost the colours
while leaving over-saturated colours alone.
