In the East near Szawle, the Russian north wing attacked and<br />

importance has taken place in the south-east.<br />

From the submarine war. The English steamer "Glenholm"<br />

Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary. Prince Biilow and the<br />

Prussian and Bavarian diplomatic representatives to the Vatican<br />

leave Rome.<br />

English attacks between Neuve-Chapelle and Givenchy repulsed,<br />

as well as French attacks on the northern slope of the Loretto<br />

height.<br />

Nothing of importance reported from the other theatres of war.<br />

The allied troops defeated at Sedil-Bahr. 2,000 men of the<br />

landing corps killed.<br />

May 24.<br />

German airmen dropped bombs on Paris.<br />

In Flanders we approached Hooge after having captured several<br />

farms. Renewed enemy attacks between Neuve-Chap elle and Givenchy,<br />

as well as to the North of the Loretto height repulsed.<br />

In the East on the Dubissa, strong Russian forces attacked and<br />

forced across the river. 2,240 prisoners and 5 machine guns taken.<br />

Violent Russian attacks at Eiragola failed.<br />

In the south-east, the troops commanded by General von Mackensen<br />

took up an offensive to the North of Przemysl. Numerous fortified<br />

places and the heights to the north-east of Bobrowka stormed.<br />

153 officers, 21,000 men, 39 guns, including 9 heavy ones, and<br />

40 machine guns captured.<br />

The Austro-Hungarian fleet carried out a successful night attack<br />

against the Italian East-coast between Venice and Barletta.<br />

May 25.<br />

The English penetrated to some of our foremost trenches at<br />

Givenchy. French attacks between Lievin and the Loretto height,<br />

Souchez-Béthune and south of Souehez repulsed, the enemy suffering<br />

heavy losses.
