German Soldiers' Letters published in the press by the soldiers' parents and relations 1. From the Western Theatre of War. The Fighting at Souchez. A young man from Pirmasens sends the following letter to his parents:— , 17th May 1915. At last I am again in a bomb-proof shelter and take advantage of an opportunity to send you an account of our doings of the past week: On Saturday, 8th May, we were sent for a rest to L. . . . In the afternoon, the French shelled our trenches that were occupied by the 6th company, at a range of about 100 m., and were successful in fairly taking the company by surprise. Now my company, the 4th, was thrown m to regain the lost ground. Towards 7-30 in the evening, we came on the enemy. My platoon advanced to the spot where the trenches had collapsed and the French stood in close masses on the other side of the parapet, which was about 10 in. in width. At first we tried to jump across these 10 m. and attack the fellows on the other side, but they shot like mad and three of our group were killed at not more than 2 m. distance from our own trenches. So we saw we should have to go to work in another way here and this was done by means of hand-grenades. I threw over the first three and when we had sent off about 40, the air began to clear. It was only the next day that we could admire the havoc worked by our grenades. The enemies lay there in dozens in what we call the "witches cauldron," Indians, Turkos, Algerians, and French, fearfully mutilated. Towards 4 o'clock in the morning in the dim dawn, we saw the first crawling back across the open field. Now it began in earnest. With hand-grenades, bayonets and the butt-ends of our rifles we fell on the fellows, who appeared in heaps. "Pardon, camarade," they cried, but in the wild attack these words mostly came too late, we made but few prisoners, nearly all lay killed in the trenches. On Sunday morning towards 10 o'clock, the last retreated in batches, one or the other falling, struck by the bullets, which we sent after them. The trench was now cleared and again in our hands. The Kaiser sent congratulations to the regiment for having maintained itself so well against the first attack of the new offensn e, and the commanding officer gave the 4th company special praise on account of their gallant
