We have the watch every third night but it is for the Fatherland. You tell me, my dear sister, not to become discouraged. That is absolutely impossible. Such enthusiasm has never before existed in the German Army. When "volunteers to the front" is called out, all present themselves, the entire battery standing like a wall and each man wishing to be first. When we come back, it is always singing, no matter how tired we are, and evenings we lie in the guard-house stripped of our trappings and sing "0 Deutschland hoch in Ehren," "Deutschland, Deutschland uber allés" or " Die Wacht am Rhein. " The Social Democrats have volunteered to lie in wait 8 days on bread and water before the enemy; everybody shouts "Forward! always forward! victory or death!" Think of Liege which the whole world considered impregnable; think of our blue jackets who voluntarily faced death to win, and you may be sure that when Christmas comes we shall either all be dead or victorious. It is beyond all description. We are longing for a decisive battle when every man will do his best to fight for Germany's honour. You can readily imagine what pride a sailor feels in being able after his many years of drilling, to fight for the Fatherland and to prove his loyalty, if needs be with his life. Even though the hungry ocean engulf us, we can.quietly face a seaman's death. The English cowards have not shown themselves, but we will yet prove what Germany's blue jackets can do. We do not know if we shall be alive in another hour, but cannot believe we are to die. It will be a bitter fight for glorious victory or honourable death. Have you not heard of the brave bo) r s at the bombarding of Libau, or the heroic conduct of the crew of the"Kônigin Luise" and the courage of the "Gôben" and "Breslau" at Messina? (Dresdener N.
