Fort 11, which the enemy defended obstinately. On 2nd June at
12 noon, the Bavarian infantry regiment No. 22 assaulted Fort 10,
in which all the bomb-proof shelters with the exception of one,
had been demolished by our heavy artillery. The fusilier battalion
of the Augusta-Garde-Grenadier regiment took Fort 12 by evening,
while the works 10 b, and 9 a and b capitulated.
The troops commanded by General von Kneussl proceeded to
attack in the direction of the town that evening. The village of
Zurawica and the enemy fortified position situated there, were
captured, no great resistance being offered. In this way, the German
troops followed later on by the Austro-Hungarian Fourth
Cavalry Division occupied the consolidated inner fortress lines and
at 3 o'clock in the morning, having made numerous prisoners
marched into the redeemed town of Przemysl. Here, the first troops
consisting of a battalion of the III. Foot-Guards, were obliged to
make a short final halt before the San-bridges, which had been
set on fire, but were quickly replaced by temporary ones. After
an investment of but four days, the fortress of Przemysl was again
in the. hands of the Allied. • The Russians had attacked the same
fortress for months fruitlessly. In spite of the hecatombs of blood,
which they had brought, they had not succeeded in taking the
fortress by storm, they only compelled it to capitulate by means of
starvation and enjoyed occupation thereof for but nine weeks.
Courageous and energetic leadership, supported by heroic troops
and excellent heavy artillery, had compelled a large fortress to fall
in an incredibly short time.
situated on both sides of the river San. The chief fortifications are \
erected at a distance of about 5—7 kilometres from the town and
extend for about 50 kilometres. The fortifications .consist of various^ .
sized forts, connected with one another by means of trenches and
other earth-works. The forts themselves are powerful earth-works
surrounded by deep ditches with numerous concrete dug-outs and
barracks with strong stone walls. Broad, double, wire obstacles
protect the entrance to the fortification works on air sides. The.
three forts on the northern iront, as well as the intervening fortification
works formed- the object of the attack carried out byKtitecj;
reinforced Bavarian division. In other words, during the'investment
of the fortress a hole had to be bored, representing in breadth
more than the 20th part of the entire investment. This was achieved
on 31st May, when the forts 10 a, 9 a, and 11, as well as the con-
