Atlantic Ocean.
October 3.
Major General v. Voigts-Rhetz Quartermaster General.
The Russians driven from North-Hungary.
Fall of 2 more forts at Antwerp.
2 Russian army corps defeated at Augustowo.
October 4.
Forts Lierre, Waelhem, Kônigshookt and intervening redoubts
fall at the siege of Antwerp. 30 guns captured at the redoubts.
Three Siberian, and parts of the Russian 22 nd army Corps,
advancing on the left wing over the Njemen, defeated after 2 days
hard fighting in the East. Over 3,U00 unwounded prisoners, guns
and machine guns captured.
According to a French official report the German cruisers
"Scharnhorst" and "Gneisenau" appeared off Papeete, Tahiti, and
sank the French gunboat "Zélée."
October 5.
From Headquarters comes the report of the successful advance
of our right wing in France on Sunday. The operations at Antwerp
and in the East are progressing systematically and without
fighting.
October 6.
Forts Kessel and Broechem at Antwerp are silenced. The city
of Lierre and the railroad fortification on the Mechlin-Antwerp line
taken.
At the first assault on the infantry works at Tsingtau the Japanese
and British were repulsed with a loss of 2,500 men.
German and Austro-Hungarian forces fighting side by side drive
back the Russians toward the Vistula at Opatow and Klimantovv.
October 7.
The line of battle in France has extended to the North of
Arras and to the West of Lisle and Lens. No results as yet.
An auxiliary army for Antwerp defeated between Linthe and
Lierre.
Report from Russian Poland that the Austrians have taken the
fortification of Sandomir.
