Home Office Research Studies<br />

The Home Office Research Studies are reports on research undertaken by or on behalf of<br />

the Home Office. They cover the range of subjects for which the Home Secre t a ry has<br />

re s p o n s i b i l i t y. Other publications produced by the Research, Development <strong>and</strong> Statistics<br />

Directorate <strong>in</strong>clude F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, Statistical Bullet<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Statistical Papers.<br />

The Research, Development <strong>and</strong> Statistics Directorate<br />

RDS is part of the Home Office. The Home Office's purpose is to build a safe, just <strong>and</strong> tolerant<br />

society <strong>in</strong> which the rights <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of <strong>in</strong>dividuals, families <strong>and</strong> communities are<br />

p roperly balanced <strong>and</strong> the protection <strong>and</strong> security of the public are ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

RDS is also part of National Statistics (NS). One of the aims of NS is to <strong>in</strong>form Parliament <strong>and</strong><br />

the citizen about the state of the nation <strong>and</strong> provide a w<strong>in</strong>dow on the work <strong>and</strong> perf o rm a n c e<br />

of government, allow<strong>in</strong>g the impact of government policies <strong>and</strong> actions to be assessed.<br />

T h e re f o re –<br />

R e s e a rch Development <strong>and</strong> Statistics Directorate exists to improve policy mak<strong>in</strong>g, decision<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> practice <strong>in</strong> support of the Home Office purpose <strong>and</strong> aims, to provide the public <strong>and</strong><br />

Parliament with <strong>in</strong>formation necessary for <strong>in</strong>formed debate <strong>and</strong> to publish <strong>in</strong>formation for<br />

future <strong>use</strong>.<br />
