<strong>Vulnerability</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>volvement</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> sex work<br />

● They consequently reduce outdoor sex markets with the follow<strong>in</strong>g potential<br />
benefits:<br />
– reduced opportunities for offenders who rely on outdoor sex markets – child<br />
ab<strong>use</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> <strong>drug</strong> dealers;<br />
– reduced opportunities for violence;<br />
– improved opportunities to safeguard health <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>in</strong> commercial sex; <strong>and</strong><br />
– reduced public nuisance <strong>and</strong> related disputes associated with outdoor sex<br />
markets.<br />
Those who had reduced their <strong>drug</strong> consumption so that it was no longer problematic <strong>and</strong><br />
also stopped sell<strong>in</strong>g sex<br />
T h e re were thirteen participants <strong>in</strong> this group. These participants’ exit<strong>in</strong>g experiences were<br />
significantly <strong>in</strong>fluenced by treatment. In several of these accounts the participants foc<strong>use</strong>d<br />
s t rongly on how change had resulted from a particular <strong>in</strong>tervention. Medically based<br />
t reatment <strong>and</strong> advice was crucial for two participants: one who had been dependent on<br />
benzodiazep<strong>in</strong>es; <strong>and</strong> another who stopped her <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> beca<strong>use</strong> of a long hospital<br />
t reatment programme for several serious illnesses. A residential rehabilitation pro g r a m m e<br />
was the turn<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for another. Five participants ended long problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong><br />
histories through prison-based <strong>drug</strong> treatment programmes. Refuge was the key<br />
i n t e rvention for one participant who related her successful exits from <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> sex<br />
work as dependent on her escape from an abusive pimp. Another female part i c i p a n t<br />
escaped an abusive pimp when he was jailed for an assault on her. She subsequently<br />
stopped both sex work <strong>and</strong> problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong>. Participants identify<strong>in</strong>g such cru c i a l<br />
positive <strong>in</strong>terventions were not found <strong>in</strong> other groups. It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g too, that of the<br />
rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g participants <strong>in</strong> this group, all expressed an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g careers <strong>in</strong><br />
s e rvices for <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong>rs or sex workers.<br />
I was <strong>in</strong> prison a month for credit card fraud, years ago now that was, <strong>and</strong> I came<br />
back out <strong>and</strong> started us<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>, but this time I haven't done that beca<strong>use</strong> I was <strong>in</strong><br />
like <strong>drug</strong> therapy as well, <strong>and</strong> that sort of opened my eyes so it's go<strong>in</strong>g alright.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from this group of exiters suggest the follow<strong>in</strong>g courses of action could break the<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ks between <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> sex work.<br />
● Successful treatment for <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> can lead to exit from sex work where sex work<br />
had been pr<strong>in</strong>cipally a means to fund <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong>.
