shar<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>jection equipment. The current study foc<strong>use</strong>d on participants’ own perceptions<br />
of their <strong>drug</strong> problems so that their reasons <strong>and</strong> experience of exit<strong>in</strong>g or change could be<br />
understood <strong>in</strong> this context. The study also compared this depth <strong>in</strong>terview data for each<br />
participant to the ACMD 1988 def<strong>in</strong>ition of problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> thus confirmed the<br />
current problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> of 98 per cent of participants who reported hav<strong>in</strong>g a current<br />
<strong>drug</strong> problem, the past problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> of 73 per cent of participants who reported<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g a past <strong>drug</strong> problem, <strong>and</strong> the absence of problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>in</strong> 96 per cent of<br />
those who reported never hav<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>drug</strong> problem. Analyses of problematic <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> are<br />
based on the self-report data.<br />
‘Hard <strong>drug</strong>s’<br />
Given this study’s focus on ‘problematic’ <strong>drug</strong> <strong>use</strong> it was felt that particular <strong>drug</strong>s –<br />
s p e c i f i c a l l y, cannabis, magic mushrooms, poppers (Amyl Nitrite) <strong>and</strong> solvents – that are<br />
associated with youthful phases, warranted exclusion. In the <strong>in</strong>terests of parsimony, the<br />
rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>drug</strong>s on which data were sought – specifically, amphetam<strong>in</strong>es, coca<strong>in</strong>e, crack<br />
coca<strong>in</strong>e, ecstasy, hero<strong>in</strong>, LSD, methadone <strong>and</strong> tranquillisers not prescribed to the <strong>use</strong>r,<br />
unknown pills <strong>and</strong> powders <strong>and</strong> ‘other’ <strong>drug</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ketam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> GHB – are referred<br />
to as ‘hard <strong>drug</strong>s’. It should be stressed that the <strong>use</strong> of this term<strong>in</strong>ology is not <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />
suggest that there are no risks associated with the <strong>use</strong> of cannabis, magic mushro o m s ,<br />
poppers or solvents.<br />
‘<strong>Sex</strong> work’ <strong>and</strong> ‘prostitution’<br />
The terms ‘sex work’ <strong>and</strong> ‘sex worker’ are <strong>use</strong>d <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with recent academic literature. This<br />
term<strong>in</strong>ology foc<strong>use</strong>s attention on occupational aspects <strong>and</strong> activities <strong>and</strong> rejects assumptions<br />
about <strong>in</strong>dividuals based on stigmatic labels. Indeed, people who sell sex have sought to<br />
legitimise an occupational conception of prostitution by re-nam<strong>in</strong>g it ‘sex work’. We resist<br />
the <strong>use</strong> of these terms when discuss<strong>in</strong>g childre n ’s <strong><strong>in</strong>volvement</strong> <strong>in</strong> commercial sex as we<br />
believe that to do so would suggest that children sell<strong>in</strong>g sex could be considered as<br />
‘work<strong>in</strong>g’. In l<strong>in</strong>e with government guidance, (Dept. of Health, 2000) we therefore <strong>use</strong> the<br />
terms ‘prostitute’ <strong>and</strong> ‘prostitution’ when discuss<strong>in</strong>g those aged under 18.<br />
