Additional Community Outreach efforts: • North Carolina State University, Duke University, St. Augustine College, Shaw University and other area institutions of higher learning provide student and professional mentors and tutors for students in need of advanced instruction as appropriate and as schedules permit. • The Director of the Academically Intellectually Gifted Program and members of the Gifted Education Leadership Team (GELT) meet with community members for a variety of events and community meetings as appropriate. Communication to Parents: • School and PTSA/PTA newsletters provide information to parents/guardians about the AIG Program and events, program options, and nomination information. Wake County School System AIG Program website events, nomination forms, AIG Parent Guide, AIG Program Brochure, and information for various program options. Essential documents are provided in English and Spanish. • The AIG Program Brochure is distributed to every school in the district and mailed to interested parents upon request. • The AIG Program Brochure is distributed to all third grade parents. • On-line surveys provide an opportunity for parents and community members to provide feedback about the AIG Program; open-ended questions are provided. • Surveys are mailed to randomly selected households without access to email. Ideas of Strengthening: Standard 6: Program Accountability The LEA implements, monitors, and evaluates the local AIG program and plan to ensure that all programs and services are effective in meeting the academic, intellectual, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners. Practice A Develops a written AIG plan describing the local AIG program in accordance with state legislation and policy, which has been approved by the LEA's school board and sent to SBE/DPI for review and comment. This practice is a Maintained Practice for 2010-2013.
Local AIG Plan, 2010-2013 Page 57 of 67 7/12/2010 Rationale: The AIG Local plan has been reviewed by stakeholders and feedback has been used for revisions intended to improve the local program. Goals: This section does not need to be completed based on the chosen category of the practice. Description: The WCPSS Central Services AIG Program staff has reviewed the program plan in all areas outlined in the template for the North Carolina Local Academically Intellectually Gifted Program Plan. Key stakeholder groups were identified and invited to provide input for the Academically Intellectually Gifted Plan 2010-2013 by evaluating the current plan’s strengths and opportunities for growth and providing suggestions for revision. Stakeholder groups included the following: parents, AIG resource teachers (K-12); principals, regular education teachers, and senior district leadership. Representatives from the educational and parent community have been invited to review and to provide comments on the revised plan. The AIG Program Plan draft will be submitted to the Wake County Public School System Board of Education for review and approval. Once approved locally, the Plan will be submitted to the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction.
