SERIES NOTES
In the second game ever played at Ford
Field, the Lions claimed a 26-21 win
over New Orleans for the fi rst win at the
team’s new downtown Detroit home. .
The first game played between the
Lions and Saints was a 20-20 tie
November 24, 1968 in Detroit.
The home team has generally had the
upper hand in the series with Detroit
compiling a 6-3-1 mark at home (1-1
at Ford Field) while New Orleans has
managed a 6-3 record at home (5-2 in
the Superdome).
In one of the NFL’s all-time amazing
finishes, New Orleans kicker Tom
Dempsey booted a 63-yard fi eld goal as
time expired to give the Saints a 19-17
victory in Tulane Stadium November 8,
1970. Dempsey’s mighty boot stood
alone as the longest fi eld goal in NFL
history until Denver’s Jason Elam
tied the record October 25, 1998 <strong>vs</strong>.
Jacksonville.
The Lions’ Richard Johnson tallied
248 yards receiving (second-in team
history) on eight receptions and earned
NFC Player of the Week honors in
Detroit’s 21-14 win over the Saints on
December 3, 1989.
The Lions kicked off the 2000 season
by defeating the Saints 14-10 at the
Superdome. The Lions’ only touchdown
of the game was courtesy of Desmond
Howard’s franchise record 95-yard punt
return in the fourth quarter.
K Jason Hanson nailed a 39-yard fi eld
goal as time expired in regulation that
li ed the Lions to a 13-12 win over
New Orleans in San Antonio. The fi nal
drive was set up by a Roy Williams
40-yard grab on 4th-and-17. Williams’
four catches for 111 yards against the
Saints, all in the fourth quarter.

SERIES NOTES
In Detroit’s 14-9 win at the Silverdome
November 13, 1994, Barry Sanders
rushed for a franchise-record 237 yards
(then-sixth-highest single-game total
in NFL history). Sanders gained a NFL
record 200 yards in the second half.
Sanders made history in Detroit’s 27-9
win over the Buccaneers at Tampa Bay
October 12, 1997. He became the fi rst
player in NFL history to record two
80-yard TD runs in the same game. He
broke off an 80-yard scoring play late in
the fi rst quarter and added an 82-yard
touchdown romp in the third quarter,
fi nishing the day with 215 yards.
The Lions ended a 26-game road losing
streak December 29, 2010 when they
claimed a 23-20 overtime win.
In the 2011 season opener, the Lions
claimed a 27-20 win on the road behind
305 passing yards and 3 TDs by QB
Matthew Staff ord and 2 TD grabs by
WR Calvin Johnson.
