SERIES NOTES
In the teams’ first meeting, the
Lions defeated Oakland 28-14 on
Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26, 1970). The
win was the second of five straight
wins by the Lions that propelled them
to their fi rst playoff berth since 1957.
Mel Farr rushed 21 times for 121 yards,
rallying Detroit from a 14-0 defi cit.
The Lions shut out the defending Super
Bowl champion Raiders 16-0 September
27, 1981. Detroit was the fi rst team to
shut out the Raiders in 15 years, as the
Lions limited Oakland to only 131 yards
in total off ense. The Lions collected six
sacks and Jimmy Allen intercepted his
fourth pass in as many games. Billy
Sims earned his second consecutive
100-yard rushing game (133 yards)
while Dexter Bussey passed Altie Taylor
as the club’s all-time leading rusher.
In a Monday Night meeting December
10, 1990, there were five Heisman
Trophy winners on the fi eld (Det: Barry
Sanders and Andre Ware, Oak: Marcus
Allen, Tim Brown and Bo Jackson).
Sanders fi nished the game with 176
yards rushing, while Jackson led the
Raiders with 129 yards on the ground.
The Lions defeated the defending
AFC Champion Oakland Raiders on
November 2, 2003 at Ford Field, the
Raiders’ fi rst trip to Detroit since 1990.
Detroit opened the 2007 season on the
road at Oakland and came away with
36-21 victory. DE Dewayne White was
named NFC Defensive Player of the
Week for his Week 1 as the defensive
end was a force in the fourth quarter
when Detroit scored 16 unanswered
points in the fi nal 10:45 to come away
with the victory. A er the Lions took a
26-21 lead in the fourth quarter, White
intercepted a pass on the ensuing
Raiders drive and returned it 28 yards
to set up a field goal to increase
Detroit’s lead to eight. On the first
play of the next Oakland possession,
White recorded a sack-fumble that was
recovered by the Lions. The play helped
set up a touchdown to seal the win..
Trailing 27-14 with 7:47 left in the
fourth quarter, the Lions completed
the 13-point comeback and became
the fi rst team in NFL history to record
four 13+-point camebacks in a season.
The Lions game-winning drive started
at the Raiders’ 2-yard line with 2:14 le
in the fourth quarter and was completed
when QB Matthew Stafford hit WR
Calvin Johnson on a 6-yard pass with
0:39 le to play.

SERIES NOTES
The Lions won each of the fi rst three
meetings between the two teams (all
home games), but have dropped the
six most-recent contests.
Detroit recorded a 34-20 victory over
the Chargers in the first meeting of
the series October 22, 1972. Mel Farr
ran for two touchdowns and gained 96
yards on 22 carries, helping the Lions
rack up 182 yards on the ground for
the game. Greg Landry also rushed
for a touchdown and added 151 yards
passing with a touchdown strike going
to Larry Walton, who finished with
seven catches for 101 yards.
Detroit fell to the Chargers, 27-24,
September 20, 1984 at Jack Murphy
Stadium. Billy Sims ran for two
touchdowns and 119 yards, including
an 81-yard touchdown scamper. Detroit
QB Gary Danielson matched Hall of
Famer Dan Fouts every step of the
way, completing 20-of-25 attempts for
269 yards, while Fouts was 22-of-35
for 268 yards. The Chargers forged to a
24-7 hal ime lead, but Detroit scored
two third quarter touchdowns to narrow
the gap to 24-21.
With a 38-10 win over San Diego at
Ford Field December 24, 2011, the
Lions clinched their fi rst playoff berth
since 1999. The team was led by QB
Matthew Stafford who completed
29-of-36 passes for 373 yards. His
completion percentage (80.6) and
passer rating (137.6) were both career
highs. His rating also set a franchise
single-game record by a quarterback
who attempted 35 passes.
