SERIES NOTES<br />

In <strong>the</strong> teams’ fir<strong>st</strong> meeting, <strong>the</strong><br />

Lions defeated Oakland 28-14 on<br />

Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26, 1970). The<br />

win was <strong>the</strong> second of five <strong>st</strong>raight<br />

wins by <strong>the</strong> Lions that propelled <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir fi r<strong>st</strong> playoff berth since 1957.<br />

Mel Farr rushed 21 times for 121 yards,<br />

rallying Detroit from a 14-0 defi cit.<br />

The Lions shut out <strong>the</strong> defending S<strong>up</strong>er<br />

Bowl champion Raiders 16-0 September<br />

27, 1981. Detroit was <strong>the</strong> fi r<strong>st</strong> team to<br />

shut out <strong>the</strong> Raiders in 15 years, as <strong>the</strong><br />

Lions limited Oakland to only 131 yards<br />

in total off ense. The Lions collected six<br />

sacks and Jimmy Allen intercepted his<br />

fourth pass in as many games. Billy<br />

Sims earned his second consecutive<br />

100-yard rushing game (133 yards)<br />

while Dexter Bussey passed Altie Taylor<br />

as <strong>the</strong> club’s all-time leading rusher.<br />

In a Monday Night meeting December<br />

10, 1990, <strong>the</strong>re were five Heisman<br />

Trophy winners on <strong>the</strong> fi eld (Det: Barry<br />

Sanders and Andre Ware, Oak: Marcus<br />

Allen, Tim Brown and Bo Jackson).<br />

Sanders fi nished <strong>the</strong> game with 176<br />

yards rushing, while Jackson led <strong>the</strong><br />

Raiders with 129 yards on <strong>the</strong> ground.<br />

The Lions defeated <strong>the</strong> defending<br />

AFC Champion Oakland Raiders on<br />

November 2, 2003 at Ford Field, <strong>the</strong><br />

Raiders’ fi r<strong>st</strong> trip to Detroit since 1990.<br />

Detroit opened <strong>the</strong> 2007 <strong>season</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

road at Oakland and came away with<br />

36-21 victory. DE Dewayne White was<br />

named NFC Defensive Player of <strong>the</strong><br />

Week for his Week 1 as <strong>the</strong> defensive<br />

end was a force in <strong>the</strong> fourth quarter<br />

when Detroit scored 16 unanswered<br />

points in <strong>the</strong> fi nal 10:45 to come away<br />

with <strong>the</strong> victory. A er <strong>the</strong> Lions took a<br />

26-21 lead in <strong>the</strong> fourth quarter, White<br />

intercepted a pass on <strong>the</strong> ensuing<br />

Raiders drive and returned it 28 yards<br />

to set <strong>up</strong> a field goal to increase<br />

Detroit’s lead to eight. On <strong>the</strong> fir<strong>st</strong><br />

play of <strong>the</strong> next Oakland possession,<br />

White recorded a sack-fumble that was<br />

recovered by <strong>the</strong> Lions. The play helped<br />

set <strong>up</strong> a touchdown to seal <strong>the</strong> win..<br />

Trailing 27-14 with 7:47 left in <strong>the</strong><br />

fourth quarter, <strong>the</strong> Lions completed<br />

<strong>the</strong> 13-point comeback and became<br />

<strong>the</strong> fi r<strong>st</strong> team in NFL hi<strong>st</strong>ory to record<br />

four 13+-point camebacks in a <strong>season</strong>.<br />

The Lions game-winning drive <strong>st</strong>arted<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Raiders’ 2-yard line with 2:14 le<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fourth quarter and was completed<br />

when QB Mat<strong>the</strong>w Stafford hit WR<br />

Calvin Johnson on a 6-yard pass with<br />

0:39 le to play.<br />

SERIES NOTES<br />

The Lions won each of <strong>the</strong> fi r<strong>st</strong> three<br />

meetings between <strong>the</strong> two teams (all<br />

home games), but have dropped <strong>the</strong><br />

six mo<strong>st</strong>-recent conte<strong>st</strong>s.<br />

Detroit recorded a 34-20 victory over<br />

<strong>the</strong> Chargers in <strong>the</strong> fir<strong>st</strong> meeting of<br />

<strong>the</strong> series October 22, 1972. Mel Farr<br />

ran for two touchdowns and gained 96<br />

yards on 22 carries, helping <strong>the</strong> Lions<br />

rack <strong>up</strong> 182 yards on <strong>the</strong> ground for<br />

<strong>the</strong> game. Greg Landry also rushed<br />

for a touchdown and added 151 yards<br />

passing with a touchdown <strong>st</strong>rike going<br />

to Larry Walton, who finished with<br />

seven catches for 101 yards.<br />

Detroit fell to <strong>the</strong> Chargers, 27-24,<br />

September 20, 1984 at Jack Murphy<br />

Stadium. Billy Sims ran for two<br />

touchdowns and 119 yards, including<br />

an 81-yard touchdown scamper. Detroit<br />

QB Gary Danielson matched Hall of<br />

Famer Dan Fouts every <strong>st</strong>ep of <strong>the</strong><br />

way, completing 20-of-25 attempts for<br />

269 yards, while Fouts was 22-of-35<br />

for 268 yards. The Chargers forged to a<br />

24-7 hal ime lead, but Detroit scored<br />

two third quarter touchdowns to narrow<br />

<strong>the</strong> gap to 24-21.<br />

With a 38-10 win over San Diego at<br />

Ford Field December 24, 2011, <strong>the</strong><br />

Lions clinched <strong>the</strong>ir fi r<strong>st</strong> playoff berth<br />

since 1999. The team was led by QB<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w Stafford who completed<br />

29-of-36 passes for 373 yards. His<br />

completion percentage (80.6) and<br />

passer rating (137.6) were both career<br />

highs. His rating also set a franchise<br />

single-game record by a quarterback<br />

who attempted 35 passes.<br />
