Ted Rath returns for his fourth <strong>season</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Lions assi<strong>st</strong>ant<br />

<strong>st</strong>rength and conditioning a er joining <strong>the</strong> team during <strong>the</strong> 2009<br />

off <strong>season</strong>. He had spent <strong>the</strong> previous two years as <strong>the</strong> assi<strong>st</strong>ant<br />

director of <strong>st</strong>rength and conditioning for his alma mater, <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Toledo. Rath was a linebacker for <strong>the</strong> Rockets (2003-2006) and<br />

helped <strong>the</strong>m claim <strong>the</strong> 2004 MAC Championship and earn two bowl<br />

game berths, including <strong>the</strong> 2004 Motor City Bowl at Ford Field.<br />

While working with Toledo’s <strong>st</strong>rength and conditioning program,<br />

Rath directed <strong>the</strong> <strong>st</strong>rength regimens for all 15 of <strong>the</strong>ir Olympic Sports.<br />

He also assi<strong>st</strong>ed with all phases of football training protocols,<br />

including design and implementation of <strong>the</strong>ir workouts. Prior to being<br />

named assi<strong>st</strong>ant director, Rath worked as a graduate assi<strong>st</strong>ant and<br />

focused on <strong>the</strong> <strong>st</strong>rength prog<strong>rams</strong> for men’s basketball, baseball,<br />

track, cross country, golf and swimming.<br />

Rath, along with Coordinator of Physical Development Jason<br />

Arapoff , <strong>st</strong>arted <strong>the</strong> annual Detroit Lions Strength and Conditioning<br />

Clinic in 2011. The event is a forum for providing, sharing and<br />

exchanging information in <strong>the</strong> ever changing world of <strong>st</strong>rength &<br />

conditioning.<br />

A er graduating from Toledo with a degree in Physical Education,<br />

Rath <strong>st</strong>arted his professional career at nearby Cre<strong>st</strong>wood (Dearborn<br />

Heights, Mich.) High School where he was an assi<strong>st</strong>ant football<br />

coach as well as <strong>the</strong>ir director of speed and <strong>st</strong>rength training. The<br />

Monroe, Mich., native is certifi ed through <strong>the</strong> Collegiate Strength and<br />

Conditioning Coaches Association (C.S.C.C.A.) and has been published<br />

on www.speedand<strong>st</strong>rengthcoach.com.<br />

Marcus Robertson joins Detroit’s coaching <strong>st</strong>aff entering his 22nd<br />

<strong>season</strong> in <strong>the</strong> NFL and his sixth <strong>season</strong> as a coach. He has coached<br />

<strong>the</strong> pa<strong>st</strong> fi ve NFL <strong>season</strong>s with Tennessee where he <strong>st</strong>arted as an<br />

assi<strong>st</strong>ant secondary coach (2007-08) and fi nished as <strong>the</strong>ir secondary<br />

coach (2009-11).<br />

Robertson’s fi r<strong>st</strong> <strong>season</strong> assi<strong>st</strong>ing with <strong>the</strong> secondary was 2007.<br />

That <strong>season</strong> <strong>the</strong> Titans improved from 27th to 10th in pass defense<br />

and from 32nd to fi h in overall yardage allowed.<br />

In 2008, three of <strong>the</strong> four Tennessee secondary players (CB Cortland<br />

Finnegan, S Chris Hope, S Michael Griffi n) were invited to <strong>the</strong> Pro Bowl<br />

for <strong>the</strong> fi r<strong>st</strong> time in <strong>the</strong>ir careers. Overall, <strong>the</strong> defensive backs collected<br />

19 interceptions, which ranked second in <strong>the</strong> NFL in interceptions by<br />

a secondary. The Titans ranked ninth in pass defense and seventh<br />

in total defense.<br />

Robertson was promoted to Secondary coach in 2009 and <strong>the</strong> Titans<br />

fi nished that <strong>season</strong> eighth in <strong>the</strong> NFL in interceptions (20) and second<br />

in interceptions returned for touchdown (4). Over <strong>the</strong> span of his three<br />

<strong>season</strong>s coaching Tennessee’s secondary (2009-11), <strong>the</strong> Titans were<br />

second in <strong>the</strong> NFL in average passing yards/completion (10.55).<br />

Robertson played 12 NFL <strong>season</strong>s a er being dra ed out of Iowa<br />

State in <strong>the</strong> fourth round by <strong>the</strong> Hou<strong>st</strong>on Oilers in 1991. He played his<br />

fi r<strong>st</strong> 10 <strong>season</strong>s in Hou<strong>st</strong>on/Tennessee and fi nished his career with<br />

Seattle (2001-02). Roberson’s NFL career was highlighted by All-Pro<br />

<strong>season</strong>s in 1993 and 1997. He played in 157 games (144 <strong>st</strong>arts) with<br />

851 tackles, 24 interceptions and 1.5 sacks.<br />

A er Robertson’s playing career ended with <strong>the</strong> Seahawks, he<br />

returned to <strong>the</strong> Titans as <strong>the</strong>ir Director of Player Development (2003-<br />

06). He spent <strong>the</strong> next four years assi<strong>st</strong>ing players with <strong>the</strong>ir career<br />

transition into and out of <strong>the</strong> NFL through continuing education,<br />

fi nancial education and dealing with family matters through player<br />

prog<strong>rams</strong>. Robertson and his <strong>st</strong>aff won <strong>the</strong> Win<strong>st</strong>on and Shell Award<br />

in 2006 for <strong>the</strong>ir innovation and commitment to player development<br />

in <strong>the</strong> NFL<br />

Robertson was inducted into <strong>the</strong> Iowa State Athletic Hall of Fame<br />

in 2009, where he <strong>st</strong>arred as a cornerback and totaled 257 tackles,<br />

six interceptions and nine forced fumbles during his four-year career.<br />

A native of Pasadena, Calif., Robertson (10/2/69) and his wife, Holly,<br />

have three children: Morgan, Milan and Marcus Andrew.<br />

Roth<strong>st</strong>ein joined <strong>the</strong> Lions coaching <strong>st</strong>aff this pa<strong>st</strong> off <strong>season</strong> as<br />

a quality control/special teams coach. He will be responsible for<br />

opponent fi lm breakdown and self-scouting in addition to assi<strong>st</strong>ing<br />

with all aspects of special teams.<br />

Roth<strong>st</strong>ein comes to Detroit a er spending <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>st</strong> two <strong>season</strong>s<br />

as <strong>the</strong> off ensive quality control coach for <strong>the</strong> Syracuse University<br />

Orange football program.<br />

Roth<strong>st</strong>ein <strong>st</strong>arted his coaching career as an undergraduate <strong>st</strong>udent<br />

for <strong>the</strong> SUNY Cortland Red Dragons where he served as <strong>the</strong> <strong>st</strong>udent<br />

assi<strong>st</strong>ant off ensive line coach, quality control, and director of video<br />

operations from <strong>the</strong> fall of 2006 to <strong>the</strong> spring of 2009.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> fall of 2009, Roth<strong>st</strong>ein interned with <strong>the</strong> Syracuse University<br />

football video operations department before returning briefl y to<br />

SUNY Cortland as <strong>the</strong>ir off ensive line coach for <strong>the</strong> spring of 2010. He<br />

returned to <strong>the</strong> Syracuse University football <strong>st</strong>aff as <strong>the</strong>ir off ensive<br />

quality control coach in July of 2010.<br />

The Merrick, NY, native attended Bellmore John F. Kennedy High<br />

School, earning recognition as a National Football Foundation and<br />

College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete for <strong>the</strong> Cougars. Roth<strong>st</strong>ein<br />

graduated SUNY Cortland with a bachelor of science in sport<br />

management in 2009. He has a fi ancé, Carol.<br />
