The A5 series is intended as a growing archive
on graphic design. Each volume introduces
outstanding personalities and important themes
from the history of international graphic
design, with numerous illustrations, essays and
interviews.
Hans Hillmann (born 1925) started to design film
posters while he was still a student, and by 1974
he had produced over 150 posters for the Neue
Filmkunst distribution company. He was appointed
to a chair in Kassel in 1961, and made a major
contribution to shaping the character of the Kassel
poster school. He worked for the cult magazine
twen as an illustrator, then later for the Frankfurter
Allgemeine Magazin. Hans Hillmann lives in
Frankfurt am Main.
The first edition of Twen appeared in 1959.
This magazine designed by Willy Fleckhaus did not
just strike the right note with a whole gene ration, it
also set new standards internationally in the magazine
design field. Something that has almost been
forgotten is a series of about seventy long-playing
records published between 1961 and 1968, as a
joint venture with the Philips record label. In his role
as art editor, Willy Felckhaus engaged graphic
designers such as Heinz Edelmann to create the
sleeves.
In 1961, eleven German publishing houses joined
forces to create the Deutscher Taschenbuch
Verlag, exclusively to publish paperbacks. The
publishers wanted the corporate image of the
company and all the book jackets to be designed
by the same hand. This was a commission that
remains unique to the present day, and it went to
the Swiss designer Celestino Piatti (1922–2007).
Piatti gave dtv its unique look for over 30 years,
and created the image of 6300 white paperbacks
with their right–justified Akzident Grotesk typeface
and characteristic cover illustrations.
