Sickle Cell Disease Project in Morshi Taluka
1 Information about sickle cell disease ‐
It is a crippling disease caused by sickling of red blood cell because of hypoxia.
It lowers average age of death and make life miserable for the patient.
2 Project in Short ‐
a) Screening of all population from 0 to 30 yrs age in Morshi Taluka for sickle cell
disease by solubility test and confirmation by electrophoresis of those who found
positive in solubility test. Screening will start from tribal villages in Morshi Taluka
and step by step whole population of Morshi Taluka from 0 to 30 yrs will be covered.
b) Treatment of sickle cell disease patients at government health facilities.
c) Health education through IEC
d) Counseling before marriage by trained counselor.
3 Objective of the Project ‐
1) To reduce mortality of Sickle Cell Disease patients.
2) To reduce prevalence Sickle Cell Disease by doing pre marriage counseling.
4 Implementation of Project ‐
Step 1 ‐ To create awareness in the society about Sickle Cell Disease through IEC.
Step 2 ‐ Mass screening will be done by ASHA. They will refer the client to the PHC, SDH
for Solubility Test. ASHA will be paid Rs.10 per client for motivation. If it is found positive
in solubility test then he will be refer for electrophoresis by ASHA and she will be paid
Rs. 25 per patient.
Step 3 ‐ Counseling of the Sickle Cell Disease patient by trained counselor including
premarriage counseling .
Step 4 ‐ Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease patients at PHC and SDH level including Blood
Transfusion facility at SDH level.
