sal<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong>trusion.<br />

7. A mechanism of C03-HC03 balance is exist<strong>in</strong>g to resist pH <strong>and</strong> alkal<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

variations <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> chloride levels do not cross a critical value that triggers<br />

sal<strong>in</strong>ity-<strong>in</strong>duced changes.<br />

8. Approximately <strong>in</strong> January <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> March, two peaks are found for chloride<br />

hardness, calcium hardness, sulfate, COD <strong>and</strong> BaD.<br />

9. It could possibly be construed that chloride <strong>and</strong> associated parameters actually<br />

fall after a w<strong>in</strong>ter maximum to peak aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> late March or early April because<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forces <strong>the</strong> above conclusion.<br />

10. In most canals, phosphate reaches a m<strong>in</strong>imum level <strong>in</strong> early January when<br />

chloride maximizes for <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce phosphate steadily rises with<br />

chloride <strong>and</strong> both hit <strong>the</strong>ir vernal peak somewhere <strong>in</strong> late March or early April.<br />

This would suggest that phosphate is diluted when sea water barges <strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

first time <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>reafter dissolved phosphate is not anymore bo<strong>the</strong>red by<br />

sal<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong>vasion. Mar<strong>in</strong>e cations precipitate phosphate <strong>in</strong> appreciable<br />

amounts when <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season peters out, when <strong>the</strong> dry season advances<br />

sewage <strong>in</strong>flux apparently out weighs <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e cation <strong>in</strong>trusion <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rare<br />

afternoon ra<strong>in</strong>s wash out accumulated terrestrial phosphate. But Poorni puzha<br />
