Focus of Case Study<br />

The focus of this case <strong>study</strong> is the preparation of a plan for the development and<br />

implementation of a new <strong>International</strong> Traveller Movements (ITM) system for the<br />

Department of Immigration.<br />

The learner will be required to prepare a plan for design and implementation of the<br />

system, taking into account factors such as<br />

• the brief provided by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)<br />

• contextual factors which determine or influence events such as:<br />

• the Department’s core business and functions<br />

• technological expertise and capabilities<br />

• the legislative and regulatory environment<br />

• the organisational culture and structure<br />

• legacy data and <strong>records</strong> which exist in different forms from previous<br />

international traveller movements systems.<br />

Learning Objectives<br />

Learners should demonstrate in their work an understanding of<br />

• the methodology for the design and implementation of record keeping systems<br />

as described in the Australian Standard AS4390 - Records Management<br />

• process mapping techniques such as flowcharting or playscript<br />

• the role of record keeping requirements in systems design and what authority<br />

sources might apply to this case<br />

1 Cassandra Findlay is part of the Electronic Record keeping Project team at the State Records<br />

Authority of New South Wales, Australia, where she recently co-developed and delivered a University<br />

accredited course on electronic record keeping, Evidence and Access. She has also worked in the<br />

archives of the Westpac Banking Corporation and for the City of Sydney Archives. She holds a<br />

Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney and a Master of Information Management –<br />

Archives/Records from the University of New South Wales.<br />
