Fifteen students graduated April
12 from a pilot program offered by
CH2M Hill at the Southwest Alaska
Vocational & Education Center
(SAVEC) in King Salmon.
Students from Bristol Bay to the
Aleutian and Pribilof Islands spent
three weeks learning how to safely
work with sheet metal and scaffolding
from CH2M Hill’s certified instructors.
Graduates were offered employment
on the North Slope.
“We focused on Southwest Alaska
because it is essentially an untapped
resource for workers. With the significant
amount of oil and gas work in
Alaska on the horizon, our long-term
goal is to develop a transferable work
force to meet the needs of our company
and our clients,” said Trevor O’Hara,
CH2M Hill.
The program is designed to prepare
students to succeed in a real-life work
environment, he said. Training also
included other job skills like resume
writing and construction math.
Beginning in May, CH2M Hill offered
a training session on electrical
apprenticeship at the school in King
Salmon.
