CHAP 1: THE NEW TENANT<br />
Gilbert learns from his family that Wildfell Hall has a tenant — a young<br />
widow. She is observed closely, especially by Gilbert, when she attends<br />
church.<br />
CHAP 2: GILBERT MEETS<br />
MRS GRAHAM AND HER<br />
YOUNG SON<br />
While out hunting Gilbert finds<br />
himself in the vicinity of Wildfell<br />
Hall and rescues a little boy from a<br />
fall. Gilbert meets Mrs Graham,<br />
the boy’s mother. Not having seen<br />
the rescue she is at first hostile.<br />
CHAP 3: ON BRINGING UP CHILDREN<br />
Mrs Graham visits Gilbert’s family with young Arthur and an animated<br />
discussion takes place on the extent to which children should be shielded<br />
from temptation.<br />
CHAP 4: GOSSIP<br />
At a small party some of Gilbert’s neighbours discuss Mrs Graham and her<br />
ideas on children.<br />
