ROAD<br />
Gilbert sets off on business<br />
and comes upon Lawrence<br />
on the road. In jealous<br />
anger he strikes him with his<br />
whip and Lawrence falls<br />
off his horse with a bloody<br />
head. Gilbert leaves but, prompted by conscience, returns to offer help. This<br />
is spurned so Gilbert continues on his way. On his return he is relieved to see<br />
that Lawrence has gone. He arrives home to reports of Lawrence being<br />
thrown from his horse. Lawrence, not wanting to involve Helen, chooses to<br />
remain silent as to the real facts.<br />

CHAP 16: HELEN REJECTS BOARHAM<br />
Helen rejects Mr Boarham’s proposal of marriage.<br />
CHAP 17: THE WARNING<br />
At a dinner party Huntingdon rescues Helen from the unwelcome attentions<br />
of Mr Wilmot. Later her aunt warns her against him, but she defends him.<br />
CHAP 18: THE COURTSHIP<br />
Huntingdon, Wilmot and Boarham spend some days with Helen’s uncle and<br />
Helen gets to know Huntingdon better.<br />
CHAP 19: HUNTINGDON’S PROPOSAL<br />
Huntingdon proposes. Helen tells him he must ask her uncle and aunt.<br />
CHAP 20: HELEN ACCEPTS<br />
Helen’s uncle, despite some misgivings, considers the match a sound<br />
investment and gives his consent. He writes to Helen’s father.<br />
