IV PREFACE.<br />

<strong>in</strong> early life removed to a distant part of <strong>the</strong> country from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

domicil of <strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>. F<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and church rec<strong>or</strong>ds at <strong>the</strong> place of<br />

birth, <strong>or</strong> of marriage, seldom show to what places such removals were<br />

made. But <strong>the</strong> identity of <strong>the</strong> family name generally enables <strong>the</strong><br />

persever<strong>in</strong>g genealogist to trace out <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>descendants</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>or</strong>ig<strong>in</strong>al family name. <strong>The</strong> difficulty is very greatly <strong>in</strong>cre<strong>as</strong>ed,<br />

where <strong>descendants</strong> of <strong>female</strong>s, who by marriage have changed <strong>the</strong><br />

family name, are to be traced out. And <strong>the</strong> compiler <strong>in</strong> many <strong>in</strong>-<br />

stances, after <strong>the</strong> most diligent <strong>in</strong>quiries and careful <strong>in</strong>vestigation,<br />

found it impossible to trace out and <strong>as</strong>certa<strong>in</strong> such <strong>descendants</strong>.<br />

Aga<strong>in</strong> : <strong>the</strong> registers of marriages, <strong>as</strong> usually kept by town clerks<br />

and by clergymen, very seldom, if ever, have an <strong>in</strong>dex to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

under <strong>the</strong> family names of <strong>the</strong> wives ; but <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dex only refers to<br />

<strong>the</strong> family name of <strong>the</strong> husband. And <strong>the</strong> registers of births very<br />

frequently mention only <strong>the</strong> family name of <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> child,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Christian name of <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r ; without her maiden <strong>or</strong><br />

family name. Even where <strong>the</strong> family name of <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong><br />

child is given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> registry of births, if <strong>the</strong>re is m<strong>or</strong>e than one<br />

<strong>female</strong> resid<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> same place and of about <strong>the</strong> same age and<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same Christian and <strong>the</strong> same family name, it is very<br />

difficult to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> identity of <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>in</strong> ancient rec<strong>or</strong>ds. ,<br />

<strong>The</strong> compiler <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e will be disappo<strong>in</strong>ted if it does not turn out<br />

that <strong>in</strong> some c<strong>as</strong>es he h<strong>as</strong> made a mistake <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> parent-<br />

age of <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>in</strong> this <strong>genealogy</strong>. And <strong>in</strong> some <strong>in</strong>stances he may<br />

have mistaken <strong>the</strong> parentage of <strong>the</strong> husband. But he h<strong>as</strong> generally I<br />

been able to test <strong>the</strong> identity of <strong>the</strong> parties to a marriage, and of <strong>the</strong><br />

parents of a child by <strong>in</strong>scriptions on grave-stones, rec<strong>or</strong>ds <strong>in</strong> family<br />

Bibles, and by <strong>in</strong>f<strong>or</strong>mation derived from <strong>descendants</strong>, <strong>or</strong> from col-<br />

lateral relatives; so that he trusts but few mistakes of this k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

have occurred. Where he had some doubt <strong>as</strong> to <strong>the</strong> identity, he<br />

h<strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>d prohahli/ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rec<strong>or</strong>d.<br />

Where <strong>the</strong> compiler could not obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> particulars of a family,<br />

from rec<strong>or</strong>ds <strong>or</strong> monuments, <strong>or</strong> from <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>or</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>or</strong> one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> children of such family, he h<strong>as</strong> been obliged to rely upon <strong>in</strong>f<strong>or</strong>ma-<br />

tion derived from collateral relatives and o<strong>the</strong>r sources. And many<br />

of <strong>the</strong> dates of births, marriages and deaths will unquestionably bo<br />

found not to be entirely c<strong>or</strong>rect. F<strong>or</strong> he h<strong>as</strong> frequently discovered<br />

that <strong>the</strong> dates of births and marriages, upon <strong>the</strong> town rec<strong>or</strong>ds and<br />
